Animal Care Technician

Responsibilities:

• Assist with the daily care and feeding of horses and cattle
• Follow daily routine care of animals as directed, following protocols to optimize animal health and ensure humane treatment
• Provide support for research efforts as needed
• Prepare reports required and related to all of the above
• Maintain effective communication (both written and oral) among other animal care staff, research managers, and farm personnel

Requirements:

• Confident in working with large animals including horses and cattle
• Experience working with equine; preferably young stock (weanlings, yearlings, sales) and/or breaking and training
• Barn Upkeep
  • Cleaning/bedding stalls
  • Appropriate cleaning/sanitation methods
  • Record keeping/inventory stock intake
  • Organizing tools
• Basic animal first aid
  • Identifying animal distress cues
  • Knowing potential hazards to animals and care takers
  • Confidently medicate animals as directed
  • Understanding of common animal drugs/pharmaceuticals
  • Knowledge of common bandages (stall wraps, sweats, hoof packs, etc.)
• Self-motivated and adaptable
  • Willing to work outside of designated roles and assist other areas when needed
  • Use initiative and common sense where appropriate
  • Able to follow directions
  • Punctual
• Provide a valid driver's license
• Pass a background check and drug test
• Be able to lift up to 50 pounds
• Work weekends and holiday hours as necessary

Preferable:

• Ability to drive large farm vehicles (or is willing to learn how to drive)
• Ability to haul trailers with livestock and supplies (or is willing to learn how to haul)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Farm/land management experience
• Comfortable working with various other species including camelids, bison, poultry, and donkeys
