Job Description:

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies has a need for an Animal Caretaker Working Lead - Non Containment to support our government customer located at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Lead employees in accomplishing daily work assignments

* Provide care at animal biosafety level (ABSL) - 1/2 and receive animals for experiments as indicated by the investigator

* Assist in providing no-routine assignment care, a change in procedure, special problems, etc.

* Responsible for independently selecting, applying, and modifying appropriate laboratory animal care procedures for species and condition of the animals

* Participate fully in all aspects of animal work including those relative to animal receipt, observation, and participation in procedures

* Close visual attention is necessary for a majority of work, and it is the responsibility of the contractor to inform the investigator, technicians, supervisor, and veterinarians of abnormalities, changes, etc., in animal conditions.

* Responsible for reporting any physical problems such as abrasions or lesions to the professional staff and primary investigators whenever noted.

* Passes on to other workers instructions received from the supervisor or COR (or another delegated representative).

* Demonstrate proper work methods and starts work.

* Insure that needed personal protective equipment and supplies are available, and that needed stock is obtained from various supply locations.

* Perform Tasks along with other employees and set pace performing non-supervisory work of the same kind and level as that done by the group led.

* Check work in progress and when finished for compliance with supervisor or COR (or other delegated representative) instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines, and urge or advise other employees to follow supervisor or COR (or another delegated representative). instructions and to meet deadlines.

* Assists in reviewing SOPs for all functions and activities as performed by Contract personnel. This shall include, but is not limited to, assisting in preparation for AAALACi site visits, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) inspections, Medical Research and Materiel Command (MRMC) Animal Care and Use Regulatory Office (ACURO) staff assistance visits, and inspections by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Department of the Army Inspector General (DAIG) or similar entities.

* Responsible for developing responses to remarks made during such visits or inspections as they pertain to Contractor areas. The AAALACi site visits occur every three years (last site visit was February 2019). The IACUC inspections occur semi-annually. Other inspections and site visits are scheduled at various times throughout the year.

* Determine the need for additional cages, as well as, assist in creating and placing identification labels or other identification; and perform a visual inspection of incoming animals for food/water source, heat prostration, cold injuries, dehydration, traumatic injuries, abnormal discharges, the character of hair coat, posture, birth during transit, or any other abnormal conditions, and shall immediately report abnormal conditions to the Chief, Department of Animal Husbandry and others as specified by VMD management.

* Provide information to supervisor or COR (or other delegated representative) on status and progress of work causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems (e.g., additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees).

* Apply practical knowledge and expertise with animal husbandry in resolving technical problems in real-time in non-containment.

* Independently plan the work and provides the needed personnel and supplies utilizing animal protocol and other guidance information as available.

* Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

* High school diploma

* ALAT certification

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

* Minimum of three (3) years in laboratory animal husbandry, with experience caring for Ferrets, Rabbits, Rodents, and NHPs.

* Experience in Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)

* Ability to integrate in a teamwork atmosphere

* Autoclave experience

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

* Forklift certification

* Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

* Must be a U.S. Citizen

* Must pass a favorable National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background clearance
