Position Purpose/Summary
Responsible for providing assistance to stray, lost, ill, injured, and abandoned animals. Work is involved with enforcing all City and state laws and ordinances regarding animals.Work is performed under the supervision of the TJO Executive Director. No supervision is exercised over other employees.
Essential Functions
* Serves as a professional and courteous representative of the Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center.Serves as a role model for the public and volunteers, ensuring that a positive approach is maintained with the public at all times.
* Possesses knowledge of animal capture and handling techniques.
* Ensures that proper care and attention is provided to all animals in the facility's custody in accordance with the facility's policies, procedures and any applicable laws.
* Assists with selection of animals to be euthanized as knowledge of animal allows.Shares any credible knowledge of animal's health or behavior to ensure responsible disposition of animals according to the procedure established by the facility.
* Investigates animal bite reports, advising both owner and victim of procedures and options.
* Adheres to systems, methods, and procedures in accordance with modern humane and business practices and those practices employed by comparable humane societies and animal control facilities.
* Analyzes all relevant data and information related to the facility's activities, and prepares required proposals, reports and recommendations.
* Maintains appropriate relationships with other public service organizations, municipal governments, vendors, news media, and the community to enhance the facility's image and to aid in attaining its objectives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Ability and skill to deal with unruly, vicious, and dangerous animals in a humane manner.
* Ability to deal diplomatically with peers and the public.
* Ability to communicate in the English language. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Education and Experience
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Minimum of two years in animal welfare/control.
