The McConnell Group, , a health science company, has an opening for a full-time Animal Health Technician to provide support at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. PIADC is located just off the northeastern tip of New York's Long Island. This position supports the Department of Homeland Security Research and Development Program vaccine studies by caring for large animals in accordance with established procedures. Ferry services to the island are provided from Old Saybrook, CT, and Orient Point, NY. The research program will be transitioning to NBAF in Manhattan, KS. Services at PIADC will be required into 2025. Candidates are not eligible if they own or work with cloven-hoofed animals, pigs, and chickens outside of PIADC due to biosecurity requirements. The only type of livestock that can be privately owned or worked with is horses.Position Requirements:

Provide veterinary/technical support in an ABSL III environment

Conduct clinical rounds and exams

Capture, restrain, hold and position animals

Prepare and administer treatments

Prepare, administer, and monitor animal sedation

Collect samples (tissue and serum)

Assist with the environmental enrichment program

Complete and maintain documentation accurately

Maintain the cleanliness of the vivarium

Maintain supply inventory

Mentor and train animal care technicians

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Associate Degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA accredited school or Bachelor's Degree in animal science or equivalent.
• Licensed in one U.S. state as Veterinary Technician is preferred but not mandatory.
• Certified or eligible for certification as LAT with AALAS.
• Background knowledge of working with research animals.
• Capable of performing technical requirements with guidance. Training provided.
• Effective verbal and written communication.
• The employee is often required to lift and carry feed materials weighing up to 75 pounds and to handle such items as feed trays weighing up to 20 pounds.
• Work requires continuous standing and walking on concrete and/or a slippery floor due to the nature of the work with animals.
• Employees must have strength and agility to restrain strong and very active animals which weigh approximately 500 pounds or more.
• Must be able to receive and maintain a Personal Security Level 3 (PSL-3) clearance and participate in the Occupational Health/Safety Programs.
