Job SummaryThe Animal Research Technician performs essential animal husbandry and healthcare duties in alignment with experimental protocols, animal welfare regulations, and industry guidelines. The technician supports scientific procedures, maintains accurate documentation, and ensures facility and equipment sanitation. This role is based in an animal research laboratory under Biosafety Level 1 and 2 conditions and may involve providing guidance to junior team members, as well as participating in site committees and workgroups.
Key Responsibilities- Comply with all relevant regulations and company policies, maintaining accurate records of animal care and related protocols.
- Provide animal husbandry, including feeding, watering, and enrichment activities, as well as maintaining and repairing animal pens and equipment.
- Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of animal rooms and equipment, including biosecurity functions such as water system sanitation and environmental sample collection.
- Conduct daily animal health and welfare assessments, administering treatments as directed by the Site Veterinarian or delegate.
- Assist with clinical sample collection, pre- and post-mortem procedures, and necropsies according to study protocols.
- Participate in scientific clinical observations and disease outcome assessments, administering experimental treatment articles as needed.
- Provide supervision and guidance to junior team members under delegation from the Group/Team Leader or site management.
Required Qualifications- Strong understanding of animal care and welfare protocols.
- Ability to work in extreme environments (hot, cold, noisy, humid) with a focus on biosecurity and attention to detail.
- Ability to lift up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
- Willingness to work directly with animals during ante-mortem and post-mortem procedures.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in an animal research or veterinary setting.
- Knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act, NIH guidelines, and AAALAC accreditation standards.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
