Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):
Works under the immediate supervision of the City of Boston Animal Shelter Manager and the Director of Animal Care and Control. Ensures all animals are cared for and treated in a humane manner.
Responsibilities
- Ensures all animals are provided with the appropriate amount of food and water.
- Follows established disease control and daily cleaning protocols.
- Cleans animal cages, quarters, equipment, and utensils.
- Assists with animal intake and evaluations.
- Creates and maintains necessary animal records.
- Performs related work as required.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to animals, dander, debris, odors, approved cleaning solutions, airborne particles, dust, and zoonotic diseases.
- Exposure to various weather conditions when working outside with animals.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- Applicant must have at least one (1) year of experience with the handling of animals.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Calendar, Docs, and email, and Chameleon preferred.
- Ability to safely handle, restrain, walk, and exercise animals of all sizes.
- Ability to safely work with animals that may be injured, unruly, vicious, or otherwise dangerous.
- Tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations are required or must be waived.
- Ability to work well and communicate effectively with the public, employees, and volunteers.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
- Ability to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Requires frequent and/or prolonged walking, bending, lifting, and stooping.
