General Description

The Animal Services Department has an opening for an Animal Services Director.

The work involves the responsibility for overseeing the management and operations of the Animal Services Department. The Animal Services Department strives to meet the needs of residents by working with volunteers and other partners to deliver cost-effective and integrated animal sheltering, animal control and animal protection services that ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of humans, pets, and the community as a whole. Addressing the problem of pet overpopulation with a proactive and positive approach is an integral ingredient of the department's mission.

The Animal Services Department currently consists of 32 full-time equivalent employees and operates with a $3 million annual budget. The department administers the Orange County Unified Animal Ordinance, planning, directing, and supervising all department services including Animal Control, the Animal Shelter, assorted programs, and communications as well as overseeing an advisory board and a pool of residents who serve on appeal hearing panels.

The Animal Services Director works under the general direction of the County Manager with considerable flexibility to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work. Supervision over others is required of this position. Position does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree AND four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in managing the operations of an animal shelter, animal clinic, zoo, or other animal-related program ANDthree (3) years of work experience serving as an administrative head or deputy/assistant with the responsibility of direct supervision of others, OR

An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above. A higher degree does not substitute for work experience.

Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) certification is preferred.

A professional with the appropriate analytical skills and ability to provide objective recommendations and analysis relating to housing challenges and opportunities andwho can manage the work of the Department as requirements change.

Cognizant of growth trends and issues and who will provide the necessary support to the County Board of Commissioners and other community organizations as they review both challenges and opportunities in the county and tits communities.

A strong communicator with a record in developing as well as supporting the needs of a professional team and Department.

A seasoned professional leader who can hit the ground running .

Committed to providing exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
