Performs clerical functions of the shelter including maintaining records and files. Interacts with public arranging animal adoptions and the boarding of animals. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Animal Shelter Manager. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to complete the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. - Performs activities of the day-to-day operations of the Animal Shelter such as maintenance including watering and feeding of animals, keeping floors and runs clean by removing fecal matter as needed.
- Disinfection of kennels and cages daily. Reporting of animal behavioral changes to Animal Shelter Manager.
- Administering vaccines & medications and assisting in surgery
- Clerical activities including receiving incoming phone calls for Animal Control, communicating with public to resolve problems and situations as they occur, storage of all information on computer database daily including rabies vaccinations and adoption records.
- Collects fees through the Adoption Program for vaccinations and/or other fees related to the program. If $100 or more is collected per day, a daily deposit is made.
- Serves as back-up to other shelter attendants as deemed necessary by the manager or designated personnel.
- Ensures proper and humane handling of all animals.
- Adheres to department's safety rules and regulations.
- Performs assigned functions during emergency situations, if appointed.
- Position includes weekend and holiday rotations. Essential personnel for emergencies/disasters.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education & Experience General knowledge of proper care and feeding of animals. Working knowledge of State and County animal control laws, policies and procedures. Some knowledge of health rabies laws. General knowledge of office policies and procedures. Basic math skills. Ability to interact with the public in arranging animal adoptions and the boarding of animals. Ability to follow all rules and regulations of shelter under the direction of the shelter manager. Considerable degree of accuracy is required in feeding different breeds of animals, in adoption procedures to avoid legal problems and to properly match adopted animals with adoptee, in collecting fees and in correct gathering and filing information. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to interact with the general public, professional individuals such as veterinarians and hospital personnel, local interest groups as well as County employees. Some computer experience with knowledge of websites, uploading of photos, etc. desired. Graduation of high school and one year of clerical and/or animal shelter experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Education in animal behavior desired, as well as a limited amount of experience in animal shelter operations.Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina. This position is a safety sensitive position and subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with the Pender County Personnel Policy and Risk Policy. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to perform job duties in all phases of shelter attendance; some heavy lifting, stooping, and running may be involved. Large, unfriendly animals, which being restrained on a control stick, can require greater than average strength to move from one area to another. Atmosphere is a one-story structure in which office area is centrally heated and cooled.
