This is the third in a series of seven classifications. The position is distinguished from the Animal Technician in that incumbents are responsible for daily care of a variety of animal species and/or are assigned additional Cage Wash duties such as, operating complex equipment, and documenting these activities and training in animal rooms in basic servicing tasks. Incumbents are generally assigned to perform animal care duties within in one facility, while Cage Wash activities are performed in multiple facilities. Work is performed under minimal supervision with assigned general expectations. The work schedule includes participation in the Animal Care holiday rotation schedule, may include weekends, and may include compensated overtime.
University Animal Care (UAC) provides humane and appropriate animal care, ensuring that the highest standards are met so that each animal's well-being is attended to. This includes providing for the animals' daily needs for clean, safe housing and access to fresh food and water; the provision of necessary veterinary care; and the monitoring of the use of animals by principal investigators and their personnel. We provide services and resources needed by investigators to accomplish their research objectives and provide training in laboratory animal care and use to technical personnel, students, and faculty.

Duties & Responsibilities
Duties & responsibilities:
- Provide daily care and maintenance of a wide variety of laboratory animal species housed within UAC facilities
- May breed or wean rodents, work with non-human primates, or work with animals exposed to hazardous materials
- Operate animal care related equipment, such as change stations, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, rodent ventilated cage racks, VHP foggers, etc.
- Break down and organize dirty caging for recycle pick-up.
- Trash removal and disinfect reusable equipment through VHP process
- Administer treatments to animals as directed
- Complete all necessary documentation
- Perform rodent euthanasia with standardized system
- Report operational problems or equipment malfunctions
- Receive supplies and equipment into facilities utilizing gas sterilization
- Organize and restock supplies in animal rooms and storage areas
- Assist with reviewing SOPs
- Additional duties may be assigned
Knowledge, skills & abilities:
- Knowledge in daily care of laboratory animals.
- Understanding of rodent breeding and weaning
- Able to utilize computer and other handheld electronics to complete required documentation and notifications daily.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- American Association for Laboratory Animal Science certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT)
