Take the first step in the right direction-are you READY?Position Summary:Under the supervision of a Mechanic, the apprentice is to assist/facilitate the installation, repair and maintenance of equipment; this includes, but is not limited to completing maintenance work orders, testing malfunctioning equipment, identifying defects, troubleshooting, repairing equipment and replacing defective parts. The apprentice will work collaboratively with other mechanical staff to identify and solve problems.Apprenticeships are a blend of classroom and paid, on-the-job training. Typically, this will be 144 hours in the classroom and 8000 hours on the job, and last about 5 years. Apprentices learn theory, mathematics, how to read blueprints and schematics, safety, and more.Once training is complete, apprentices become journey mechanics.
  • Key Responsibilities/Duties:
  • Assist in inspection, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment or machinery including but not limited to container handling units, yard tractors, forklifts, and terminal chassis
  • Assist in diagnose and repair component parts of machinery including gearboxes, hydraulic systems, brakes, compressors and other related parts; diagnose and repair chassis components and systems, brakes, pneumatic, suspension, alignment
  • Utilize computer or diagnostic tools to enter and retrieve information
  • Use hand tools, hoists, pressure gauges, drills, grinding wheels, and other tools proficiently to carry out assigned tasks
  • Assist in yard truck and chassis repair, remove, repair and replace transmissions, engines, brakes, suspensions, exhaust, fuel, cooling and electrical systems
  • Read and use factory manuals and blueprints as required to fulfill job assignments
  • Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours
  • Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor
  • Act in accordance with Port Houston core values (respect, excellence, accountability,diligence, and you)
  • Perform other duties as required
Education/Experience:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors:
  • General working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Judgment and quick thinking skills
  • Ability to work with written or oral directions
  • Ability to climb and be comfortable at heights
  • Ability to operate forklift, if needed
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of safety precautions concerning occupational hazards
  • Ability to work with others
  • Ability to pay attention to detail
  • A current, valid Texas driver's license is required
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment
