Placement within these positions are $21.00 and $28.00 hourly, respectively and is based upon experience. Under close supervision, the Apprentice Utility Worker learns skills required to perform water and sewer system maintenance and repair activities by participating in the Utility's education and training programs and through on-the-job training. The trainee assists with and performs a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance, installation, and repair of the water distribution system's main lines, service connections, fire hydrants, valves and other appurtenances. The Trainee also assists with various tasks in the maintenance and repair of the wastewater collection system's gravity mains, force mains, manholes and appurtenances. RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalent required.Valid state Motor Vehicle Operator's license and acceptable driving record requiredOperation of a variety of vehicles and equipment required.Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker and air brake endorsement required within the first 18 months of employmentPossess or obtain a valid MUTCD flagger certification within the initial 18 monthsPossess or obtain within 18 months Competent Person Certification for trenching and shoring.Possess or obtain within 18 months Confined Space Entry certification.Possess or obtain within 18 months a Rigging Certification to support crane operations.Possess or obtain within 18 months a skid steer certification.Possess or obtain within 18 months an OSHA 10hr certification.Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of work zone safety procedures. Flagger certification, confined space entry certification and trenching and shoring training required to perform some tasks.Knowledge and ability to utilize computer tablets, laptops, pads, and other electronic devices to follow and document work activitiesKnowledge of City, Department and Division policies and procedures.Effective oral communication skills and ability to demonstrate customer service skills.Skills in construction and repairs of water and sewer related infrastructure.Skills in the safe operation and maintenance of vehicles, trucks, equipment and tools.Ability to perform job assignments with minimum supervision and ability to make sound decisions.Ability to successfully complete required driver training, including written and practical tests.Ability to complete work orders and forms in a clear, accurate and timely manner.Ability to comprehend and implement required training and safety principles and procedures.Starting pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
