Aquarist I
Description
Reporting to the Curator of Fish and Invertebrates, this position shall provide a supportive role in the operation and function of the Fish and Invertebrates Department, with final authority in such matters remaining with the Director of Animal Care.
As an Aquarist I
* Primary role in all functions and tasks related to the acquisition, care, and public display of the living collection under the charge of the Curator of Fish and Invertebrates Department, including fresh and marine fishes, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles and plants.
* Play a key role in maintaining the highest standard in the areas of husbandry, diet preparation, record keeping, and animal observations
* Provide support to senior staff and to play supportive rolesf daily presentations, guest interactions, and other programs as applicable.
* Assist in food preparation, environmental enrichment, facility/habitat maintenance, accurate record keeping, medical/husbandry procedures and animal observations.
* Possess a strong knowledge of fresh and marine fishes, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles and plants.
* Maintains established criteria for all existing behaviors with the entire fish and invertebrates collection
* Uphold USDA standards in all areas of operation including commissary, animal areas, laboratory, freezers/coolers, and medical facilities
* Perform basic water quality and life support procedures of fish and invertebrates exhibits
* Be aware of animal handling techniques to ensure the well being of the fish and invertebrates collection
* Perform other duties as assigned by management
Experience Required
* Associates degree in life sciences or biology. Must have one year relevant experience and progressive growth through hands-on work in aquatic animal care in husbandry, and exhibit development, with emphasis on fresh and marine fishes, invertebrates, amphibians, and reptiles. Candidates with a suitable combined equivalent of education and experience will be considered. SCUBA certification through an accredited diving agency and documented 3 hours of recreational and/or facility maintenance diving. Knowledge of Life Support Systems: sand filtration, protein skimmers, pumps, UV sterilization and ozone. Must be able to demonstrate a proficiency in public speaking and guest interaction. Must be able to work on a team, as well as function individually with little supervision when necessary.
Salary
$17.00-$18.50
