The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina's wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The NCWRC employs 700 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is charged by General Statute 113-132 with the management, regulation, protection, and conservation of wildlife resources and inland fisheries in North Carolina. The Inland Fisheries Division is responsible for the management, development, conservation, protection, and regulation of the state's inland fisheries and supporting ecosystems. A critical part of the Division's mission is the conservation of nongame aquatic species. The Aquatic Wildlife Diversity (AWD) section's purpose is to conserve these freshwater aquatic resources by implementing the recommendations of the North Carolina Wildlife Action Plan. AWD staff conduct surveys, research, and management of North Carolina's aquatic non-game wildlife resources including state and federally listed species.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a Conservation Biologist Supervisor (AWD Survey and Monitoring Supervisor) for our Inland Fisheries Division. This is an administrative and supervisory position responsible for survey and monitoring coordination; program administration; data management; supervision; and other duties.
The AWD Survey and Monitoring Supervisor supervises, directs, coordinates, and assists with the survey and monitoring components of the AWD section within the Inland Fisheries Division (IFD). This position directly supervises four permanent staff biologists and three term-limited biologists as well as oversees seasonal temporary staff. The activities of the work group include conducting status and distribution surveys of conservation needy species (nongame fishes, aquatic snails, crayfish, and freshwater mussels), quantitatively monitoring priority aquatic communities within North Carolina river basins; representing aquatic nongame issues within the Commission's broader conservation programs; working with the broader conservation community within the basins to achieve aquatic conservation objectives; providing technical guidance to local, state, and federal governmental agencies, landowners, educational institutions, and conservation organizations; and performing public outreach. This position will work closely with the AWD regional coordinators to identify and implement the priorities for each region. This employee represents AWD and has decision-making authority when the IFD Assistant Chief for Aquatic Wildlife Diversity is unavailable. This position is responsible for all the administrative tasks associated with the daily operations of the survey and monitoring component of the AWD section. Other responsibilities include helping to ensure that agency policies and procedures are implemented within the AWD section; assisting with the development of the annual operating budget; overseeing data entry, management, and coordination; assisting with the implementation of the Programmatic Safe Habor Agreement/Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances for North Carolina aquatic nongame species, supporting AWD interests in land acquisition, assisting with human resources actions, implementing workplace safety, coordinating the review and issuance of collection permits, and coordinating Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) management efforts for AWD.
A normal Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm schedule is associated with this position. The work week may exceed 40 hours during certain times of the year.
The position is OFFICE-BASED. The workstation for this position will be either at Sykes Depot (Alamance County) or Marion Depot (McDowell County).
This position has statewide responsibilities and requires frequent in-state and occasional out-of-state travel with overnight stays. Assignments and projects may be based across the state. Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion.
