Job Description:

The Head Swim Coach plans, schedules and organizes the activities of a competitive swim team; supervises the safety and operation of pool facilities during team workouts and swim meets; ensures the safety of all pool visitors through enforcement of pool rules and regulations; plans, schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates the performance of an Assistant Swim Coach and Coach Volunteer; prepares swimmers of all ages physically and mentally for competition and coaches and instructs participants in a variety of competitive swimming techniques and skills; maintains discipline at workouts and meets and promote good sportsmanship behavior; plans and organizes swim meets and prepares swim meet entries; ensures proper sanitation of pool water is maintained and that dressing rooms, restrooms, and pool areas are clean; promotes and enforces water safety procedures; performs swimming rescues; provides first aid and CPR as needed; responds to other emergencies as they occur; activates the District's Emergency Action Plan and makes 911 calls as appropriate; serves as primary contact for the District with the swim team Volunteer Parent Club; keeps District management informed of public relations, personnel and swim facility operation and maintenance issues; prepares and completes all necessary paperwork; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The incumbent in the Head Swim Coach classification is a part-time seasonal employee and may not advance to permanent status in any District job classification. Hours of work vary based on the staffing needs of the District.

Under limited direction within a framework of established policies and procedures, the incumbent is fully competent to exercise judgment in interpreting and explaining policies and procedures and in determining appropriate actions required to address complex issues and problems. The Head Swim Coach performs swim team program planning, team development, swim league and parent board interaction, staff supervision, and establishes safety protocols in an independent manner with limited supervision. Assignments are given in general terms and are subject to periodic review while in progress and upon completion. There is significant latitude for independent judgment and action.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

The Head Swim Coach classification receives general to limited direction from a Recreation Aquatics Coordinator, Recreation Services Manager and/or Recreation Services Superintendent. Incumbents in this classification provides direct supervision to an Assistant Swim Coach I/II, and/or volunteer coaches during swim team activities.

EXAMPLE OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervises the safety and operation of pool facilities during team workouts and swim meets; ensures the water chemicals are tested and that all necessary pool and safety equipment is in working order and in place prior to pool use; ensures that proper sanitation of pool water is maintained during use; and ensures the safety of all pool visitors through enforcement of pool rules and regulations.
  • Plans, schedules, trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of an Assistant Swim Coach I/II and volunteer coaches and keeps District Recreation Services Manager informed of personnel and/or performance issues.
  • Prepares swimmers of all ages physically and mentally for competition; coaches and instructs participants in a variety of competitive swimming techniques and skills, including strokes, starts, turns, and finishes.
  • Maintains discipline at workouts and meets and promotes good sportsmanship
  • Plans and organizes swim meets and prepare swim meet entries; completes accident and incident reports, timecards, and other paperwork required by District policy and/or
  • Promotes and enforces water safety procedures; rescues and resuscitates drowning persons as needed; and provides care using the latest American Red Cross techniques in lifeguarding, first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to persons in need of assistance
  • Serves as primary contact for the District with the swim team Volunteer Parent Club; responds to parental inquiries and concerns raised during the season; and keeps District Recreation Services Manager informed of related program and public relations
  • Attends all swim team social and special events; oversees and presents various awards to participants.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and orderliness of dressing rooms, restrooms, and pool areas and keeps the District informed of pool facility operation and maintenance issues.
  • Activates the District's Emergency Action Plan and makes 911 calls as needed.
  • Completes accident and incident reports, timesheets, and all necessary swim team, swim meet, and swim league reports as well as other reports and records as required by policy and/or regulation.
  • Attends and participates in coaches' meetings and Aquatics Staff in-service trainings.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.
Education and Experience Guidelines:

Must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent; and

have at least two years of experience equivalent to that of Assistant Swim Coach I/II with the District.

Licenses/Certification Required:
  • A current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate
  • A current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate
  • A current American Red Cross Title 22 First Aid for Public Personnel certificate
  • A current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate preferred
