This is skilled manual work pruning, cutting, and removing trees, limbs, branches, and stumps. Team Members in this position will perform a variety of routine tasks independently. An assigned supervisor reviews work by observing results obtained, conferences, and periodic reports or evaluations. The Arborist I may serve as the lead team member in the field.
Starting Pay for this position is $18.31.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical
* Utilizes truck-mounted hydraulic lifts or extension ladders and uses powered chainsaws, shears, or other cutting implements to remove branches and trees that are broken, dead, or present a hazard
* Operates boom and bucket trucks, tractors, backhoes, mechanical chippers, stump grinders, and chainsaws
* Trims trees obstructing the visibility of traffic signs and lights and clears brush from drainage ditches and right-of-way
* Performs Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) when necessary
* Trims all City streets and rights-of-way; trims all palms and trees at City parks and facilities; structurally prunes all newly planted trees throughout the City; air spade and root pruning
* Assists in tree permitting and inspections; assesses trees and provides supervisor with status reports
* Utilizes geographic information systems (GIS), asset management software, and work order systems
* Manages work orders, updates GIS attributes
* Trains new team members in proper tree care and maintenance
* Performs routine servicing and preventive maintenance work on power tools, machinery, and equipment; cleans saws, rebuilds, and adjusts carburetors and sharpens or replaces cutting chains and blades
* Returns calls to residents of the City of Largo
* Assists the Trades Technicians with large projects; holiday set-up
* Performs Emergency tree mitigation during non-working hours
* Performs training exercises: knots, ropes, rigging equipment and hardware, chainsaws, and other miscellaneous equipment
* Injects palm trees with oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), a broad-spectrum antibiotic
* Attends seminars and educational courses to maintain International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Arborist certification (30 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) required every three (3) years for re-certification)

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
* High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) and three (3) years experience in tree trimming, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or a directly related field, or equivalency of training and experience
* ISA Arborist Certification, Forestry, or related arboricultural accreditation required; (the ISA Certification Board requires a candidate to have a minimum of three (3) years of full-time experience in arboriculture; acceptable experience includes the practical use of knowledge involved in pruning, fertilization, installation and establishment, diagnosis and treatment of tree problems, cabling and bracing, climbing, or other services that directly relate to arboriculture)
* CDL Class B
* Temporary Traffic Control (TTC), chainsaw, chipper, aerial vehicle, tree pruning, and removal
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in trimming, cutting, and removal of trees
* Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of tree trimming
* Skill in the use of pole shears, power saws, and other standard tools and equipment used in tree trimming
* Ability to work at considerable heights
* Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and directions
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment: 10% inside a climate-controlled building; 90% outside, which may include driving.
Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately one (1) hour per day, standing approximately four (4) hours per day, and walking approximately three (3) hours per day. The work requires frequent: bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 15 pounds, lifting/carrying of objects weighing 15 to 44 pounds; often requires lifting/carrying objects weighing 45 pounds and over.
Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to understand what others are saying in normal conversation in person and on the telephone, and ability to detect specific noises and the proper equipment operation. Speaking: Ability to communicate orally with others in person and on the phone. Seeing: Ability to operate a motor vehicle, to cut, climb, and walk.
Driving Requirements: The work requires frequent driving and possession of a valid Florida Class B CDL Driver's License.
Technology: The work requires the ability to operate telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and laptop computers, calculators, and all associated software. The position also requires proficiency with computer hardware and software programs, including GIS and asset management software.
