**Arborist I or Arborist II**
The City of Moorhead is accepting applications for Arborist I or Arborist II in the Forestry Division of the Public Works Department.
The Arborist II is a skilled trades position while the Arborist I is a semi-skilled position. The Arborist II position performs basic/intermediate work caring for, maintaining, planting, replacing, inspecting and removing City trees, and related work as required. The Arborist I position performs basic work pruning, planting and removing trees, operating various machinery and equipment, performs routine maintenance and safety checks on equipment and vehicles, and related work as required.
**HOURS: Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.**
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
_The essential functions of both the Arborist I and II positions are included, but are not limited to the following major duties performed. Duties are listed from most to least important. Duties are for both positions unless indicates specific to Arborist II._
+ Performs tree pruning, tree removal and log loader operations. ARBORIST II includes complex tree removals, individual pruning requests and stump grinding as directed.
+ Plants trees on City boulevards and other public areas.
+ Operates log loader, boom trucks, skid steer loaders, chain saw and various other equipment.
+ Operates truck and brush chipper following the weekly garbage routes picking up brush from boulevards and chipping before hauling to the compost site.
+ Performs routine maintenance and inspection on equipment including trucks, skid steers, tool cats, power tools and small engines.
+ Performs safety checks and maintenance inspections on shop equipment, forestry vehicles and other equipment. Performs Preventative maintenance on equipment.
+ Performs traffic control/proper signage at work sites.
+ Operates snow and ice removal equipment to augment street maintenance crews.
+ Processes and enters information into computerized systems. Maintains records, files. ARBORIST II maintains tree database
+ Provides information; answers calls from the public; answers questions or refers to appropriate personnel.
+ Performs lead work responsibilities over seasonal personnel as needed or directed
+ Performs other duties as requested; including assisting other divisions within the department.
+ Attendance at off-site courses/trainings/seminars may be required.
**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
To perform the Arborist I or II positions successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The Arborist I and II requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required.
**ARBORIST I - REQUIREMENTS**
+ High school diploma or GED
+ One year experience in forestry, construction or other related field **OR** Associates Degree in related field
+ Minnesota Tree Inspector certification within one year of hire.
+ Maintains Electrical Hazard Awareness Training yearly.
+ Valid Driver's License
+ Valid class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Training provided.
**ARBORIST II - REQUIREMENTS**
+ High school diploma or GED
+ One year experience in tree trimming and removal, or related field
+ ISA Arborist Certification
+ Maintains Electrical Hazard Awareness Training yearly.
+ Valid Driver's License
+ Valid class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Training provided.
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES**
For references to thorough/basic, Arborist II requires thorough knowledge and Arborist I requires basic knowledge for the following: forestry, landscaping and horticulture as applied to parks and grounds areas; thorough/basic knowledge of tree maintenance principles, practices, equipment, tools and materials; thorough/basic knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used; ability to operate required equipment such as log loader, boom truck, chain saw, pruning tools, branch chipper, tractors, etc.; ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance manuals, polices, procedures, technical documents and diagrams; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to lift heavy articles; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS**
The Arborist I and II requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and lifting, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
