Job Summary

The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Arborist on the Gainesville campus. This position will maintain trees and woody plants to ensure their health, safe, and attractive. This includes pruning, staking, planting, watering, fertilizing, and removal of any dead or decaying limbs or trees. Considered essential personnel during emergency events.

Responsibilities

* Conducting health and risk assessments on campus canopy and specimen trees. Maintains trees and woody plants to ensure their healthy, safe, and attractive condition, including chemical applications; repairing, cabling, fertilizing, watering, and pruning; and removal of any dead, diseased or declining trees, or other woody plants.

* Operate basic and mid-sized landscaping equipment (riding and zero turn mowers, light tractors and implements, dump trucks, utility vehicles, wood chipper). Perform preventative and minor corrective maintenance on assigned equipment.

* Physically demanding manual labor consisting of lawn care, flower and shrub planting and maintenance, snow & ice removal and treatment.

* Develops tree care plans for the campus. Assists in developing or providing input for landscape plans.

* Assist grounds crew with lawn care and landscaping as needed.

* Event set-up and breakdown support.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Knowledge of soil management, plant identification and selection, plant installation and establishment, tree biology, pruning, diagnosis and treatment, urban forestry, tree protection, tree risk management.

* Skillsets in operating hand tools, powered equipment such as chainsaws and pruning saws, and heavy machinery.

* Follow safety procedures and work in a safe manner.

* Ability to operate power tools, basic and mid-sized landscape machinery and equipment.

* Must be able to perform preventive maintenance and minor corrective maintenance on equipment and tools.

* Must be able to operate a vehicle to various job sites.

* Must be able to understand and follow specific oral and written instruction and assist with planning.

* Must have the ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, often in adverse weather conditions.

* Must be able to work at heights up to 40 feet, execute work requiring bending and reaching overhead, lift up to 50 pounds, and climbing ladders of varying sizes.

Required Qualifications

* Minimum of High School or GED required.

* 2 years Grounds/landscaping and tree care experience required.

* ISA Arborist certification or ability to obtain it within provisional period.

* Valid state driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

* Degree in Environmental Horticulture, Forestry preferred.

Proposed Salary

Standard Hiring Range: $19.72 - $21.69 per hour
