Job Responsibilities
Each position is located at one of the eleven (11) AREA III bus maintenance shops and does NOT float between shops. In the supplemental questions, please indicate your preferred shop assignments.
Area III shops include: Abbeville, Anderson, Fairfield, Greenville, Greenwood, Johnston, Laurens, Newberry, Oconee, Pickens, and Taylors counties.
The person in this position will fuel school buses and related vehicles. Maintain fueling schedule as issued by supervisor, and completely and accurately record number of gallons. Perform fueling duties as directed by supervisor. Perform general service maintenance for assigned shop vehicles including maintaining grease, oil, and fluid levels. Perform required scheduled service maintenance checks for assigned vehicles and adhere to all grease, oil, and other vehicle fluid additions and changes as scheduled by supervisor. Inspect, change, repair, and mount tires as required. Ensure that tires operating on assigned vehicles are in compliance with all safety standards. Assist with the inspection, general repair, and annual repair, and perform preventive maintenance on vehicles. Follow prescribed daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly maintenance schedule. Follow state maintenance policies, rules, and regulations. Report major preventive maintenance problems to Shop Foreman or Assistant Foreman. Assist in the evaluation, diagnosis, and repair of routine maintenance failure problems and report major problems to Shop Foreman or Assistant Foreman. Perform required maintenance checks on state vehicles and maintain fluid levels. As directed, respond to emergency calls to make determination of severity of problem. Make repairs to vehicle or as needed, report to Supervisor for additional assistance. Maintain accurate records in dispensing of parts, and request part replacements when parts are used to maintain truck inventory parts supply as set by the Foreman. Perform all job functions in compliance with Weather, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures. Use, as instructed, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). If a PPE item is missing, the Technician should report such to the supervisor. Follow Office of Transportation guidelines to provide preventive maintenance services on vehicles, immediately notify supervisor of related problems or other observed concerns. Ensure equipment is clean and in good operating order at all times. Provide other services in support of the school bus maintenance shop mission or the Office of Transportation mission as instructed by the Foreman or Assistant Foreman.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Work experience involving the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
One (1) year of mechanical experience in automotive or related repair and servicing; or any combination of training and experience that would enable an applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Required to lift objects weighing 50 pounds and to move objects weighing 125 pounds 30 feet. Must be able to operate power, hydraulic and electronic equipment. Must possess or acquire within 120 calendar days a valid Class A or B CDL with Tank Vehicle, Passenger and Air Brake endorsements, Tanker Operation certification, and criminal background check. Successful candidates will be extended an offer of conditional probationary employment, at which time they will be required to submit to and pass a drug screening for illegal drugs and must pass the SDE/USDOT medical exam.
