SUMMARY:
Lawrence Technological University is seeking a part-time Campus Safety Officer dedicated toproviding a safe campus environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Campus Safety Officers perform numerous duties to assist in the safety of the entire campus community. The responsibilities of a Campus Safety Officer are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the University's mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion. This position is non-sworn. This position is armed and the selected candidate must possess a valid Michigan CPL or current LEOSA certificate.
JOB DUTIES: Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the following:
* Provide great customer service. Strive to exceed the needs of University, students, faculty, staff and visitors.
* Act as a first responder to all emergencies on campus to protect life and property.
* Demonstrate and promote the values of the University.
* Visibly patrol campus on both foot and in a marked vehicle.
* Observe, identify, and report suspicious person(s) and/or situations.
* Complete detailed and accurate written communications, including incident reports.
* Ensure that unauthorized persons leave the university when warranted.
* Perform escorts for students, faculty and/or staff when requested.
* Provide security at special events, functions and/or for dignitaries.
* Report safety concerns involving buildings, structures, yards and parking lots.
* Maintain and utilize applicable security systems such as, but not limited to, card access systems (ProWatch), Closed Circuit Television (NUUO), and Emergency Notification (RAVE).
* Provide First Aid, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) when needed and as trained. Be able to be certified in First Aid and CPR.
* Secure University buildings through the use of physical locks and alarms according to scheduled times and/or as requested by proper authority.
* Conduct building searches and building checks.
* Communicate effectively with local emergency services (Southfield Police and Fire).
* Enforce University rules and regulations on campus.
* Monitor parking conditions. Assist students, faculty, staff and visitors that in need of assistance.
* Monitor and enforce University parking regulations. Issue citations when warranted.
* Report fire and safety hazards on campus.
* Provide lost and found property services.
* Develop a basic understanding of the operation of building mechanical systems to allow the recognition and reporting of problems to Campus Facilities.
* Work accurately and effectively with computers and data systems. Including the use of common office programs and applications.
* Interact effectively with people of diverse backgrounds while promoting a positive working environment and employing effective conflict resolution skills.
* Demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal, which transcend diverse audiences.
* Communicate effectively with other departments and personnel at the University.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Campus Safety or their designee, including assignments off campus.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The selected candidate must meet the following:
* Possess a valid Michigan CPL or current LEOSA certificate and demonstrate proficiency on the MCOLES Course of Fire for Active Law Enforcement Officers.
* Possess a valid Michigan Driver's License and maintain an acceptable driving record.
* Successfully pass a pre-employment screening which may include, but is not limited to, a criminal background check, verification of academic credentials, license, certifications, and/or verification of work history.
* Must be able to work an irregular schedule, with no set days off. Duty shifts may include working days, afternoons and/or midnights. May be required to work weekends and holidays. May be required to work additional hours during peak times. May be required to work mandatory overtime.
* Be able to meet the physical demands of the position which require the selected candidate to frequently stand, walk, go up and down stairs, bend over, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, sit, patrol in vehicles, and use their hands.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Lawrence Technological University is a private, STEM-based institution. The most sought-after programs at LTU include Architecture, Engineering (Architectural, Electrical, Mechanical, etc.), and Business. Lawrence Technological University boasts numerous accreditations, such as with the Higher Learning Commission. LTU Athletics are steadily growing at LTU and are members of the NAIA. Half of LTU's residence halls have been built in the past 10 years, representing a steady growth and change into a residential campus.
While performing the duties of this position, a Campus Safety Officer is regularly required to work in outdoor weather conditions. The employee may occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, and may have to work in extreme heat and/or extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions of this position.
While performing in this position one may work in outside weather conditions, in vehicles, offices, empty buildings, under-lighted hallways, darkness, in crowds of people, in vehicular traffic, during hours of daylight and darkness and may be required to perform under extreme emotional conditions. May occasionally work near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to automobile related petrochemical fumes.
A Campus Safety Officer may be subject to unpleasant, hostile, mentally unstable, intoxicated, aggressive or threatening persons who have the potential to become agitated, physically assaultive, verbally abusive, and may use profane language or gestures.
In all circumstances, a Campus Safety Officer must demonstrate sound judgement and problem-solving skills. The employees must display the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions based on available information. A Campus Safety Officer must demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal, which transcend diverse audiences. Must have the ability to communicate effectively and relate well to students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining appropriate decorum.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The selected candidate must at minimum possess a High school diploma or equivalent . Preference will be given for an Associate, Bachelor or advanced degree from an accredited Institution of Higher Education in criminal justice or related field, or for graduating from a Military Police Academy.
The selected candidate will have experience as a member of local, state, or federal law enforcement agency and will have separated from service in good standing.
RENUMERATION:
The hourly wage is contingent upon experience. Part-time benefits include paid time-off and a tuition fee waiver for the employee and members of the employee's household.
