DescriptionThe City of Roanoke Libraries are seeking 5 armed security officers to provide protective services work in maintaining the safety and security of staff and visitors. This individual will also be a part of the library team, working in our library branches and assisting with patron needsand program support.This position maintains a presence in the Libraries to deter disruptivebehavior,intervenes quicklywhenincidentsarise and supports the efforts of the libraries work within the community. Officers will assist inevacuations as needed as well as notifyresponsible authority when problems require immediate attention outside the security officer's ability and/or authority and cooperates with any responding law enforcement or emergency medical personnel. They will also preparenecessary incident reportsand review security footage when needed.Associate's degree or equivalent from two-yearcollege or technical school with a major in police science or criminal justice desirable; one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and training. Must meet requirements outlined in the Code of Virginia, 6 VAC 20-174-40 for registered armed security officer. Other duties may be assigned:* Maintains a presence in Libraries to deter disruptive or violent behavior.* Monitors the Libraries' reception and community rooms.* Intervenes promptly in incidents involving disruptive or violent behavior.* Attends interviews with individuals known to have violent or disruptive behaviors.* Assists in fire drills and evacuations within the Libraries, as needed.* Notifies the appropriate authority when issues arise that require immediate attention beyond the security officer's capacity or authority. Cooperates with responding law enforcement or emergency medical personnel.* Ensures the safety of patrons within the Libraries.* Investigates disturbances.* Prepares necessary incident reports.* Assists with employee relations issues as needed.* Provides support to management and staff as required.SUPERVISORYRESPONSIBILITIESThis position does not have supervisory responsibilities.Typical QualificationsTypical QualificationsQUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Proof of DCJA training completion will be required.Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen.Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment Physical Readiness Test.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.Key physical demands for this position include:* Ability to patrol the property and access areas quickly.* Physically able to capture and detain individuals if necessary.* Prolonged periods of standing and monitoring areas.* Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEAssociate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a major in social science or police science desirable; one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.Supplemental InformationLANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Be properly trained, licensed and meets the requirements outlined in the Code of Virginia, 6 VAC 20-171-120 for registered armed security guard. Able to produce fire arms training certification.
