Department SummaryThe Department of Art and Art History, established in 1911, offers BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Brief Description of DutiesThe Department of Art and Art History at San Jose State University is searching for part-time faculty to encourage critical thinking and iterative concept development within class assignments. We seek candidates with a contemporary, experimental art practice and a desire to have a voice in curriculum development. The selected candidate may teach courses in one or more of the following areas: Contemporary Issues in Photography (degree in Art/Photographic History or equivalent experience required for this course); additional Studio Lighting courses, including Advanced Studio Lighting and Photographic Illustration; Beginning (digital) Photography and Color (digital) Photography; Image and Idea, concept-driven portfolio and exhibition development for gallery and public art distribution settings; Black and White Photography (beginning darkroom); Intermediate Digital Imaging; Advanced Black and White Photography (intermediate to advanced darkroom); and Advanced Photographic Media (a course with rotating topics that include Photo as Document and Portraiture). Department lecturers are also required to participate in 1-2 faculty meetings each semester and provide assessment data and information to the department. SJSU's Photography Program is known for its exceptional facilities and the breadth of its offerings in photographic media.

  • Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity—including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation—through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
  • Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Required QualificationsMaster of Fine Arts degree in Photography. A clear demonstration of artistic achievement, as evidenced by a current record of significant exhibitions that include photo-based media. Teaching experience at the university level is required. An impressive portfolio of creative photo-based work. Strong writing skills and an ability to direct and assess student writing within the context of a studio class. Demonstrate experience and expert level of proficiency in both digital and darkroom photographic practices, including a thorough knowledge of contemporary equipment, materials and chemistry, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, as well as familiarity with Epson printers and software.

For Studio Lighting courses, candidate must also have relevant teaching experience and knowledge of lighting equipment with a digital workflow.

  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred QualificationsTeaching experience at the university level with two years of photographic teaching at the university level.

Anticipated starting salary:

  • L-A / Range 2 - $5507 - $5959
  • L-B / Range 3 - $6221 - $7481
  • L-C / Range 4 - $6825 - $9431
  • L-D / Range 5 - $8593 - $10347

Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full-time AY faculty—part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester (full-time AY annual salary = rate x 12). See the Faculty Salary Schedule for more information.

    Conditional OfferThe work for this faculty position is located in the State of California and requires commuting to the campus.
