Through upholding principles of professionalism, ethics, and respect, we offer personalized support across various dimensions of workplace engagement.General Purpose of the PositionAs the Staff Interpreter reporting to the TE ASL Services Department Manager, your primary responsibility will be to deliver precise and coherent ASL/English interpretation services across diverse sectors, including Federal Government contracts, private businesses, educational institutions, and medical facilities. Your assignments will encompass a range of scenarios, including on-call duties, training sessions, platform interpreting, Video Remote Interpreting, and facilitating one-on-one or small group meetings. Additionally, you will be expected to participate in TE staff meetings, promotional events, and conferences.Essential Functions
  • Conducts proficient sign language interpreting and translation services for clients across various environments, adhering to established American Sign Language/English interpreting protocols.
  • Consults with clients, TE personnel, and service providers to identify any potential obstacles that may hinder the successful delivery of interpreting services, such as issues related to instructional materials.
  • Exhibits complete adherence to TE's standards and policies, as well as the RID Code of Professional Conduct, which includes upholding utmost confidentiality at all times.
  • Enhances interpreting skills through continued education training.
Non-Essential/Additional Duties
  • Performs special assignments, projects, and other duties that align with the mission and vision of the company.
  • Represents the company as industry and company events, and professional conferences, as needed.
RequirementsQualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of professional experience as a certified sign language interpreter across diverse professional and business environments.
  • Active RID National Certification including compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and/or certification requirements.
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel between different work sites.
  • Must be able to obtain a US Secret Clearance (with our sponsorship)
  • Ability to be assigned to the majority of TE customer contracts in the Washington Metro Area.
  • Must possess and maintain national certification. Failure to maintain national certification will result in disqualification for this position.
Knowledge of:
  • Proficiency in standard manual communication methods for the Deaf and hard of hearing, encompassing American Sign Language, Signed English, fingerspelling, and non-manual expression such as facial, eye, and body language.
  • The culture and cultural experiences of the American Deaf community.
  • Current developments, trends, and techniques in the field of interpreting for both the Deaf and hard of hearing as utilized by the Deaf community.
  • National Association of the Deaf (NAD)-Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended, the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Basic record-keeping to develop materials, procedures, metrics, and presentations.
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct, and adherence to RID CPC at all times.
  • Capabilities of computer systems, equipment, and software used in providing interpreting services for the Deaf.
Skilled in:
  • Conveying the sophisticated thought, intent, and spirit of a Deaf/hard of hearing or hearing speaker to a target audience with superior accuracy, tact, cultural competency, and linguistic integrity.
  • Interpreting/transliterating expressively and receptively using manual and oral methods of communication for the Deaf and hard of hearing.
Ability To:
  • Ability to employ an extensive sign vocabulary to ensure accurate interpretation across diverse subject matters and linguistic registers, emphasizing proficiency in formal business and high-register, high-context vernacular.
  • Establish and sustain cooperative and effective relationships with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, as well as individuals from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds.
  • Capable of fulfilling the distinct responsibilities of a designated interpreter for executive-level clients, including seamlessly integrating into the client's team and adapting to their work environment.
  • Ensure confidentiality of information shared during interpreting sessions.
  • Effectively communicate through signing, speaking, and writing, ensuring clear and accurate transmission of subject matter.
  • Conduct research relevant to work and participate in continuous learning and professional development.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team environment, offering and receiving support from colleagues.
  • Work effectively in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records.
  • Exercise patience, tact, flexibility and sensitivity.

Physical DemandsThis role functions in diverse environments, primarily delivering in-person services at customer locations, with occasional virtual or remote work as needed based on customer needs. The described physical demands are typical for performing essential job functions.
