JOB DESCRIPTION ASSISTANT AQUATICS DIRECTORThe Assistant Aquatics Director oversees and coordinates all aspects of American Red Cross (ARC) Swim lessons for the WCC including scheduling of lessons, registration and communication with participants. The Assistant Aquatics Director also manages all Water Safety Instructors & Lifeguard staffing of lessons, communications related to lessons for families, assessment/evaluation of swimmers, and ensures that all lessons are executed enthusiastically, safely, and securely within the guidelines of the ARC. The Assistant Aquatics Director will also provide additional programming and staffing support of childcare, youth and adult swimming programs.REPORTS TO: Aquatics DirectorEMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full time salaried or hourlyPRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assuming responsibility for the Whitin Community Center American Red Cross Instructional swim program, including handling this instruction and processing forms for the Red Cross.
- Responsible for all aspects of swimmer registrant's experience during swim lessons, from registration and welcome, to evaluation, to enrollment and guidance for continuation of lessons.
- Work with the Aquatics Director to hire and train all WSI staff to assist in the execution of swim lessons, verifying suitability to teach swim lessons.
- Work with Aquatics Director to insure all Instructional Swim lessons are staffed properly, and that there is a variety and flexibility in the offering of classes.
- Supervise, train, and manage the schedules for all WSIs.
- Work with the Aquatics Director to ensure for Lifeguard staffing of swim lessons.
- Develop and maintain private swim lesson program, including curriculum and record keeping.
- Work in a variety of capacities in both pools, and be flexible to switch assignments during shifts, between Assistant Aquatics Director, to WSI, to Lifeguard, and back again.
- Maintain American Red Cross instructor/trainer certification in Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor certification, and First Aid/CPR/AED training.
- Assist Aquatics Director with Training other Aquatics staff at the WCC to maintain their Red Cross certifications (including WSI, Lifeguard and First Aid & CPR/AED). Be responsible for all course records in accordance with the classes he/she teaches.
- Hold current Certified Pool Operator certificate with a good working knowledge of swimming pool maintenance and chemical operations. Be prepared to handle any problems at any time. Repair lane lines, pool vacuum and pressure washer when needed. Know the state codes for swimming pools, OSHA rules and regulations for safety and the chemicals in use and first aid for such chemicals.
- Assist the Aquatics Director with regular facility safety inspections.
- Test pool chemicals daily and record in log. Report any problems or variations.
- Assist Aquatics Director with planning the seasonal schedules for swim lessons: times, ratios, instructor and lifeguard scheduling, tracking attendance, and communication with parents/guardians, insuring all shifts are staffed appropriately during hours of operation.
- Provide administrative support to the Aquatics Director including recommendation of programs to be included on the fall/winter/spring/summer schedules and assist in the development of the aquatic department budget where appropriate/related to Swim Instruction.
- Work with the Child Care Director and when applicable, Lead Teachers, in the formulation of appropriate recreational activities for the Preschool, Kindergarten Prep, Group Child Care & School-Age programs. Implementing same programs.
- Supervise, schedule staff for, and organize Camp Whitin Aquatics activities and programs.
- Ensuring the safety of the Whitin Community Center members & guests and lifeguard team. Maintain discipline and general safety practices over all people in the pool area while on duty.
- Work with Aquatics Director to correct any problems, answer any complaints or suggestions about the operation of the aquatic department.
- Maintain the cleanliness and the neatness of the pool areas. Assist/Lead with pool shutdown and maintenance projects for both pools. Assist Aquatics Director with maintenance of pool supplies, chemicals, and other items used daily in both pools.
- Maintain discipline and general safety practices over all people in the pool area while on duty.
- Find other ways to utilize the pool bringing in new programs and find coverage for such programs.

RequirementsREQUIREMENTS:
- Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications are prerequisites for this position
- Certified Pool Operator or be willing to train as one
- WSI Instructor Certified
- Maintain American Red Cross instructor/trainer certification in Lifeguarding or be willing to train as one
- First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certified or be willing to train as one
- Competency with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Outlook & Word, or be willing to train
- Possess decision-making skills
- Read, understand and explain WCC and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and Northbridge Board of Health policies and procedures
- Ability to recognize and react calmly and effectively in hazardous/dangerous situations
- May be exposed to verbal outbursts, physical actions or bodily fluids as part of the environment
