This advertisement is for an 11-month, tenure-track faculty position in the Cancer Prevention in the Pacific (CPP) within the larger Population Sciences in the Pacific (PSP) Program at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center (UHCC; an NCI Designated Cancer Center). The position will be open until filled. Applicants for the position must show strong promise of establishing an active research program in the area of cancer prevention and control, as demonstrated by a strong track-record of peer-reviewed publications and experience writing and submitting competitive research proposals to National Institutes of Health (NIH). This position is expected to begin approximately Spring 2025.
The mission of the CPP program is to reduce cancer disparities in Hawaii and the Pacific through behavioral and community-based research. Areas of research currently represented within the CPP include tobacco and e-cigarette prevention, areca (betel) nut use prevention and cessation, cancer survivorship, skin and colorectal cancer screening, cancer care delivery research, and skin cancer prevention. The successful candidate will increase the depth of current research in the program or expand the program's range of research. Research areas in which the program seeks to expand include, but are not limited to, diet and physical activity interventions, health promotion interventions for cancer survivors, and applications of mHealth, community-based participatory research, and dissemination and implementation science to cancer prevention and control. Experience conducting cancer disparities research and cancer-related research among Asian/Pacific Islander populations would be considered a major strength. In addition, demonstrated ability of being able to conduct research as part of a multidisciplinary team would be considered a strength.
The position will be funded by appropriated funds for the initial 2-year appointment; subsequent partial external funding is expected. Continuation of appointment is contingent upon satisfactory performance. UHCC provides an attractive recruitment package including space in the beautiful Cancer Center building in Honolulu, start-up funds and a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Core facilities available to Center investigators include Biostatistics, Genomics and Bioinformatics, Analytical Biochemistry, Nutrition Support, Metabolomics, Pathology, and Diversity Research and Recruitment. UHCC has active research training programs involving mentorship of graduate students, postdocs, and early-stage investigators.
Assistant Professor Duties and Responsibilities
* Perform professional and scientific research on cancer prevention and control research within the diverse population in Hawaii and the greater Pacific catchment area, addressing cancer health disparities with a community-engaged approach highlighted by population and patient-based behavioral interventions.
* Maintain an extramurally-funded research program of national reputation in the area of cancer prevention research.
* Collaborate with faculty members of the UH Cancer Center, the Hawaii Cancer Consortium, other UH departments, and community-based health care providers on research projects, researcher training/mentoring, and other academic activities.
* Supervise postgraduate students (PhD or MS) and participate in graduate level teaching.
* Perform scholarly activities as assigned.
* Support in program recruitment efforts and serve as a mentor for junior faculty.
Associate Professor Duties and Responsibilities
* Same duties and responsibilities as Assistant Professor but will require greater accountability for more complex projects.
* Serve as a role model within the UH Cancer Center, the UH, and in the national and international research, academic, and/or medical community.
Researcher Duties and Responsibilities
* Same duties and responsibilities as Associate Professor but will require greater accountability for more complex projects.
* Will assist in the administration of the program and with other related professional and scientific research endeavors.
Assistant Researcher Minimum Qualifications
* Doctorate in preventive medicine, public health, behavioral sciences, health communication; or related area from a college or university of recognized standing.
* Three (3) to Four (4) years of experience as a postdoctoral fellow or equivalent in the related field.
* Demonstrated ability to generate independent research reports, publications and grant proposals.
* Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students and/or assistants.
* Demonstrated initiative, interest in scientific work, and adaptability.
Associate Researcher Minimum Qualifications
* Doctorate in public health, behavioral sciences, or related area from a college or university of recognized standing.
* Four (4) years of effective research with demonstrated increasing professional maturity and independence at the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent.
* Demonstrated research ability judged competent and adequate for the rank as compared with peers active in the same field at other major research universities;
* Demonstrated ability to plan and organize research activities; Demonstrated ability in teaching, research, and program administration;
* A strong research track record with active national peer-reviewed funding in cancer with evidence of a sustained extramural funding base.
* Demonstrated ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues, and to effectively meet, interact and confer with others.
Researcher Minimum Qualifications
* Doctorate in public health, behavioral sciences, or related area from a college or university of recognized standing.
* Four (4) years of effective research with demonstrated increasing professional maturity and independence at the rank of Associate Professor or equivalent.
* Demonstrated research productivity which has resulted in significant recognition by the national or international community of scholars active in the same field;
* Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and/or supervise research activities; Demonstrated ability in teaching, research, and program administration;
* Demonstrated capacity for independent professional research as shown by participation in the affairs of regional and/or national research groups and/or societies;
* A strong research track record with active national peer-reviewed funding in cancer, with evidence of a sustained extramural funding base.
* Demonstrated ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues, and to effectively meet, interact and confer with others.
* A program of innovative research with an outstanding record of scientific accomplishments as evidenced by significant scholarly contributions and publication in top-tier journals.
Desirable Qualifications
* Research focus in population sciences area(s) that directly impact the people of Hawai'i
* Evidence of commitment to and success in educational programs and mentoring.
* Service on national or international journal editorial boards and grant review study sections.
