Job Description Summary:
The Department of Biostatistics & Data Science at the University of Kansas Medical Center is recruiting a tenure track faculty member in the data sciences with preference toward candidates that have a track-record of scholarship big data analytics and experience retrieving and leveraging data from large biomedical and health-related databases to conduct cutting edge scientific research. The candidate selected for this position will join a vibrant group of faculty, staff, and students, leveraging their expertise big data analytics to derive insights that have the potential to improve the early detection of disease, improve patient outcomes, and optimize healthcare delivery.
The Department of Biostatistics & Data Science consists of 25 Ph.D. biostatisticians/data scientists, 3 teaching associates and 31 staff members that include masters level statisticians, informaticians, bioinformaticians, data scientists, information systems personnel, and administrative personnel. The Department is a hub of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation, serving over 200 graduate students across 5 graduate programs, including the MS and PhD in Biostatistics, MS in Health Data Science, MS in Applied Statistics, Analytics, and Data Science, and the PhD in Clinical and Translational Science. Expertise within the department includes linear, nonlinear, and longitudinal modeling, clinical trial and experimental design, survival analysis, categorical data analysis, statistical omics, data integration, research information technology, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and Bayesian methodology. The Department currently provides core support to the following NIH-funded centers: The University of Kansas Cancer Center, Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Frontiers Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Kansas IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence, and the Kansas Institute for Precision Medicine COBRE. Department personnel have led number of initiatives to support biomedical and clinical research across the institution, including: the Curated Cancer Clinical Outcomes Database (a cancer research facilitator and recruitment tool, PMID: 31798300), OPTIK (a tool for understanding the characteristics of a cancer center catchment area, PMID: 32719846), collaboration with Cerner's Learning Health Network, working with Epic's Cosmos (a very large de-identified medical record dataset), oversight of the University of Kansas Cancer Center's involvement in the ORIEN network, and innovating data science infrastructure, tools, and technologies that enhance the quality and rigor of research being conducted across the above-mentioned research centers and institutes. We are now looking to expand the breadth and depth of faculty in big data analytics to meet the growing demand for expertise and leadership to grow these important initiatives.
The recruitment for this position is at the assistant or associate professor level, commensurate with the candidate's experience and accomplishments. This opportunity will allow a faculty member to utilize their skill set and expertise to enhance the Department's mission to provide an infrastructure of data science expertise to support and enhance the research, service, and educational needs of the University of Kansas Medical Center and its affiliates , along with learning and growing from the knowledge gained through collaborative and independent research, teaching, and mentoring. * Teach data science and/or biostatistics courses for graduate students in biostatistics, applied statistics, analytics, data science, and other disciplines.
* Collaborate with researchers across the medical center and its affiliates to support cutting edge biomedical research that maintains the highest standards of scientific rigor.
* Lead research that involves both the development and application of novel data science methodologies with biomedical applications.
* Contribute to grant writing and scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Required Qualifications
Education: PhD in Data Science, Biostatistics, Biomedical Informatics, or related fields.
Work Experience: Teaching experience in the data sciences or related fields. Track-record of scholarship in the development and application of big-data analytical methods, approaches, pipelines, tools, and/or technologies.
Preferred Qualifications
Work Experience:
* Experience retrieving and analyzing data from large biomedical data repositories, e.g., the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), dbGap, Human Microbiome Project, ORIEN, etc.) or large clinical/population databases (e.g., Cosmos, Centrus, Medicare claims, EPIC EHR, NHANES, Framingham, etc.).
* Experience with high-performance computing, including cloud-based.
* Experience with artificial intelligence and machine/deep learning.
* Creation of data pipelines to efficiently process and analyze biomedical or health-related big-data.
* Experience in the submission of grant proposals as PI, co-PI, or co-I. Interdisciplinary scholarship experience and a track-record of successful team-science collaborations.
Skills:
* Able to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, students, and researchers from diverse academic backgrounds and fields.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
