Wilkes University is an independent, comprehensive university dedicated to academic excellence in the liberal arts, sciences, and selected professional programs. The University has approximately 2,000 students at the undergraduate level and 1,500 full time equivalent students at the graduate and first professional levels.Wilkes University invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor of Africana Studies and coordinator of the Africana Studies minor. As the inaugural coordinator, the successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to provide crucial guidance and leadership for this new minor program.The successful candidate will serve as coordinator of the Africana Studies Minor and offer courses that serve the minor. The coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, including: working with University Chairs to engage instructors to teach courses that serve the program and encouraging the development of new courses. Additionally, the Coordinator will oversee program assessment and review of curriculum. The coordinator will also be responsible for publicizing the minor and recruiting students, advising and mentoring minors in the program, engaging in outreach to student organizations, and helping to facilitate extracurricular and co-curricular programs.The successful candidate will have expertise in Africana Studies or a related discipline and will be able to teach required courses for the minor, including Introduction to Africana Studies. The coordinator will also contribute other courses that serve the minor and should have a high level of competence in at least one of the following areas as they relate to Africana Studies: (1) History, (2) Literature and the Arts, or (3) Social Theory (broadly understood to include the contributions of disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, etc.). The coordinator will join the Academic Department or Division most appropriate to their particular area of specialization and will report to the Chair of this unit. A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline in hand by the time of appointment is required. This is a 9-month position with a half-time teaching component and an additional summer stipend. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
