Job Description:

The Nebraska Workers' Compensation Court is looking for a highly responsible and detail-oriented person that provides clerical and administrative support services to the Office of the Clerk of the Court. We offer a unique experience where the legal, insurance, and medical industries intersect. An experience that cannot be found in other areas of the Nebraska judicial system.

* Assemble materials to create new docket folders for petitions, lump sum settlements, and releases of liability.

* Closely monitor court filings and documents received via eFax or eFiling.

* File and process pleadings and other documents. Examine contents for consistency with statutory and procedural requirements.

* Process petitions and, within statutory and procedural guidelines, use case information and data from various database sources to determine parties to whom service should be made. Prepare summons and serve appropriate parties via certified mail, sheriff, or other delivery methods allowed by statute.

* Prepare trial, continuance, and advancement notices using word processing templates and distribute to appropriate parties involved.

* Review applications for lump sum settlement for statutory filing requirements. Process applications which meet filing requirements. Decline applications which do not meet filing requirements.

* Review signed orders of lump sum settlements for accuracy. Process and distribute to appropriate parties involved.

* Review releases of liability for statutory filing requirements. Process releases which meet filing requirements. Decline applications which do not meet filing requirements.

* Type general correspondence.

* Account for filing fees and other monies received by the court.

* Review closed cases and determine which cases are ready for permanent retention in accordance with the court's Record Retention Schedule. Review filings and documents for completeness. Purge qualified docket records and scan pleadings, exhibits, and other documents for permanent retention.

* Maintain accurate records of filings and legal actions on forms and in the computer system.

* Greet and assist visitors. Direct litigants for hearings and trials. Answer the telephone, refer calls, and provide basic case and procedural information without giving legal advice.

* Maintain filing systems by accurately filing and retrieving materials to ensure ready access to information, including maintaining the flow of files and information with the Administrative Sections of the court using e-mail, shared directories, and databases on the court's computer network.

* Serve as the mail clerk/messenger, including opening mail, mail deliveries, and mail retrievals. Sort and organize mail, review mail and distribute to the proper person, and send certified mail.

* Assist in maintaining section procedures.

* Order supplies for the Office of the Clerk of the Court and for the judges.

* Update the lobby monitor with the daily court schedule.

* Work in cooperation with teammates to ensure daily duties are completed timely.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum of a 2-year degree in business, legal, or leadership OR a minimum of 2 years of experience in administrative assistant, legal, insurance, or business-related positions.

Other: Ability to type accurately, minimum 45 words per minute. Indicate or attach a copy of a typing test taken within the past 12 months. If you do not have one, a typing test will be required at the interview stage.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of current office practices and procedures and use of standard office equipment.

* Knowledge of business English, grammar, and punctuation principles.

* Knowledge of legal terminology and format.

* Knowledge of legal documents pertaining to the court.

* Knowledge of Nebraska workers' compensation laws and rules of the court as they apply to this position.

* Skill in the use of word processing and spreadsheet software.

* Ability to create and maintain a positive working environment.

* Ability to type accurately, minimum 45 words per minute.

* Ability to file and retrieve documents accurately.

* Ability to apply critical thinking techniques.

* Ability to understand and accurately follow complex verbal and written instructions.

* Ability to handle a large volume of detailed tasks.

* Ability to maintain an accurate work product while working in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.

* Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize individual work assignments and to communicate the status of assignments.

* Ability to accurately proofread documents.

* Ability to perform effectively under stress.

* Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with court and/or state personnel at all levels, and with the public.

* Ability to follow established policies and procedures.
