Position Type: Athletics/Activities/CoachingDate Posted: 11/15/2024Location: Junior High SchoolDate Available: 1/14/2025Closing Date: 01/01/2025THE CLASSICAL ACADEMY POSITION DESCRIPTION Title: Assistant Coach- Track and Field- Throws Date: November 13, 2024 FLSA Status: Exempt Stipend: $611.71 GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: TCA is seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Junior High Track and Field Throws Coach to work with student-athletes in the shot put and discus. The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing young athletes, a strong understanding of throwing mechanics, and the ability to create a positive and inclusive environment. This coach will be responsible for teaching the fundamentals of throwing techniques, designing appropriate training programs, and helping athletes improve their performance throughout the season. - Coaching & Skill Development:
- Teach and demonstrate proper techniques for the shot put and discus.
- Develop training programs that focus on building strength, improving technique, and increasing endurance specific to throwing events.
- Provide individualized coaching to athletes, helping them set and achieve personal goals and improve their performance in meets.
- Conduct drills, exercises, and conditioning routines that enhance throwing power, technique, and flexibility.
- Analyze athlete performance, offering constructive feedback to help athletes refine their skills.
- Practice & Meet Preparation:
- Lead throws-specific practices, ensuring athletes are prepared physically and mentally for competition.
- Coordinate with other coaches to integrate throwing events into overall team practices.
- Supervise athletes during practices and meets, ensuring safe and effective participation in all activities.
- Organize and implement warm-up and cool-down routines to ensure athlete safety and injury prevention.
- Competition & Event Management:
- Prepare athletes for local meets, including technique refinement and mental preparation.
- Ensure athletes understand meet logistics, rules, and event expectations.
- Provide guidance and support to athletes during competition, including warm-ups, strategy, and focus.
- Track athlete progress during competitions, adjusting coaching strategies as needed to achieve the best performance.
- Safety & Injury Prevention:
- Ensure that all throwing activities are performed in a safe manner, adhering to best practices in throwing technique and equipment usage.
- Monitor athletes for potential injuries and provide first aid when necessary.
- Encourage proper warm-up and cool-down practices to prevent injury and promote recovery.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Coaching certification in track and field or specific throwing events (e.g., USATF, NFHS).
- Previous experience coaching youth or junior high athletes.
- Familiarity with the rules and regulations of track and field competitions.
- Qualifications:
- Previous coaching experience, particularly in track and field throwing events (shot put, discus, etc.), is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of throwing mechanics, strength training, and conditioning specific to the throwing events.
- Ability to coach and motivate athletes of varying skill levels, from beginners to more experienced throwers.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to provide clear instructions and constructive feedback.
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of the season).
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required for practices and meets.
- Positive attitude, enthusiasm for working with young athletes, and a commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive team environment.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Maintain regular communication with athletes, parents, and school administration regarding athlete progress, meet results, and team news.
- Work collaboratively with the head coach and other assistant coaches to ensure a cohesive and supportive training environment.
- Participate in team meetings, providing input on team strategy and individual athlete development.
- Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate records of athletes' attendance, performance, and progress throughout the season.
- Ensure that all necessary paperwork (e.g., medical forms, eligibility forms) is completed and submitted on time.
- Help with organizing equipment and ensuring all necessary gear (shots, discs, etc.) is available and in good condition.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED equivalent required Undergraduate degree preferred EXPERIENCE: Experience as a coach at the secondary level is preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to represent the school community with high character when interacting with a variety of public groups, i.e. leagues, organizations, schools, and media
- Ability to communicate with all activities staff, as well as parents, students, other staff members, and visitors to the school
