Department Summary

The University of Mississippi Museum and Historic Houses is a two-site (two-museum) unit of the Oxford campus. The Museum is unique in our region in the scale and scope of its Collections, Exhibitions, and Public Programs and William Faulkner's historic house is a National Historic Landmark federally-designated literary heritage site. The Museum has 8 total professional staff and Rowan Oak two - all are dedicated to a workplace culture of collaboration, collegiality, creativity and innovation, and mutual support of each other. The Museum has on several occasions had national rankings listings in the upper tiers of national academic museums.

Role Summary

Assists in exhibition planning, development, and preparation. Assists in researching, developing, and preparing interpretive materials to enhance academic teaching, research, and general public education.

This position assists the Curator of Exhibitions & Collections Manager with all aspects of the care and registration of objects in the Museum Collections. The incumbent performs gallery and exhibit maintenance, responds to image usage inquiries and manages files and database input.

Examples of Work Performed

* Assists with symposiums, conservation, digitization, and other program Assists with scheduling and hosting visitors conducting research and object study.

* Updates database to correspond to condition reports, conservation work, and current object locations.

* Assists the curator/collections manager with collections inquiries. Performs collections care such as preventative conservation, proper storage techniques, conducting inventories, and monitoring environmental conditions.

* Assists with processing incoming and outgoing loans, temporary custodies, and acquisitions.

* Provides assistance with packing, shipping, and rehousing collections objects.

* Works with staff in achieving administrative goals and objectives such as fundraising and events.

* Monitors climate control to ensure conditions are adequate for collections and gallery display. Generates reports and responds to issues.

* Adheres to collections pest management and gallery housekeeping schedule.

* Database and file management such as inputting loan agreements, catalogs, exhibits, and conservation maintenance, correcting entries and nomenclature that are incorrect, image file management, and digitizing collections documents to enhance database entries.

* Climate and gallery monitoring including monthly climate reports, data logger and kiosk maintenance, and gallery cleaning.

* Collections care and registration including condition reports, object tracking, shipping, packing, responding to image requests, and contributing to collections housekeeping and object care.

* Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.

Core Responsibilities:

1. Provides assistance with ongoing projects that support the curatorial mission of the Museum.

2. Assists with managing access, object images, database, and archives both for research and community use.

3. Conducts ongoing collections care, registration, and database entry and exhibitions projects with limited supervision as assigned by Curator & Collections Manager.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Assists in developing, proposing, and coordinating small- to medium-scale exhibitions, museum-related public programs, and publications.

2. Conducts research related to the collection, including content for exhibitions and related publications.

3. Produces original research, presents at conferences and participates in professional organizations.
