ASSISTANT CONTROLLEREMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY - Rochester, NYFinanceHarter Secrest & Emery LLP is seeking an assistant controller to join the firm's Finance department. The assistant controller will have professional responsibility for a variety of accounting, financial, and operational functions. The position works closely with the director of finance and controller as well as the finance staff to ensure the accounting systems of the firm are effectively managed. Additionally, making certain that the general ledger records and reports are correctly and accurately prepared. This position has supervisor responsibilities for the General Ledger Accountant, Finance Specialist and Accounts Payable Clerk.Job Responsibilities: Oversee and direct the general operations of the Finance department, including accounts payable, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger balances; Implement efficient policies and procedures to establish a well-organized work flow; Coordinate month-end close; prepare reports to be included in the monthly financial package; Coordinate all external auditor requests prior to and during financial reporting audit and benefit plan audit fieldwork; Interpret and monitor changes in accounting rules and regulations; ensure that all financial reports are prepared on a timely and accurate basis according to accounting standards; Monitor and analyze daily cash management operations; prepare cash flow forecasts; and review and approve bank reconciliations; Review and approve miscellaneous administrative expense items up to $5,000; Collaborate with the information technology department to maintain all financial computer applications systems, programs and reports; Create timely and accurate internal reports, ensuring consistency and standardization amongst the various types of reports using the Firm's financial management software; Develop and propose pricing models for alternative client fee arrangements; Analyze financial and operating reports to offer solutions and recommendations to billing partners and financial management leaders to assist in achieving profit goals and objectives; Develop and implement efficiencies to increase the effectiveness of reporting and maintain practice group reports used internally; Evaluate, recommend, and implement internal control processes for the Firm; Develop and maintain new standardized metric reporting on a routine basis, i.e., define, create, automate, and maintain operational cyclical reporting; Create reporting enhancements, including the development of new reporting templates, analytical reports and graphs, for use in Firm financial modeling and forecasting; Maintain a reporting schedule and documentation of reporting procedures; Assist with hiring and training of Finance staff; and Complete special projects as assigned.Knowledge and Skills Required: Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices; Thorough knowledge of financial management software applications; Expert proficiency with MS Excel, including pivot tables, strong proficiency with other MS Office applications; Ability to interface with multiple users across the organization and effectively manage reporting requirements from start to finish; Intensive focus on user needs in defining user requirements and retrieving accurate information from data sources; Attention to detail, in particular as it relates to compliance and accuracy of data; Strong analytical and interpretive skills; Strong interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to work effectively with Firm partners and staff; ability to work collaboratively as part of the Finance team; and Good organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to respond to multiple priorities and meet varying deadlines.Education and Experience Requirements: CPA, MBA or MS in Accounting and three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible work with assignments in accounting, finance, and managing employees; experience in a legal or professional service organization desirable; OR BS or BA in Accounting or other related financial discipline and seven (7) to nine (9) years of progressively responsible work with assignments in accounting, finance, and managing employees; experience in a legal or professional service organization desirable; CPA strongly preferred.Salary range: $90,000 to $105,000, depending upon experience.
