The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the financial operations of the institution, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and maintaining accurate and timely financial records. This position is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting functions, assisting in financial reporting, budgeting, and audits, and collaborating with various departments to ensure financial efficiency and integrity.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master's preferred). CPA preferred or progress toward certification.
* 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial role, preferably in higher education or nonprofit sectors.
* Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and general ledger management.
* Strong knowledge of GAAP, FASB, financial reporting, and familiarity with regulatory compliance specific to higher education and internal controls.
* Experience with IRS Form 990, NCAA financial reporting, and IPEDS submissions is highly desirable.
* Proficient in Banner ERP or similar accounting software, with advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and SQL.
* Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
* Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Essential Duties/Responsiblities
* Financial Reporting and Analysis: Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal and external stakeholders. Support the Controller in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Conduct variance analysis and provide explanations for significant discrepancies between actual results and budgeted forecasts.
* General Ledger Management: Assist Director of Accounting to oversee the daily operations of the general ledger, ensuring proper posting of transactions. Review journal entries for accuracy and completeness. Coordinate monthly and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
* Compliance and Auditing: Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), federal and state regulations, and institutional policies. Assist in preparing for internal and external audits, including gathering documentation and responding to auditor queries. Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard the institution's assets and ensure proper financial procedures are followed.
* Cash Management: Assist in cash flow management, including overseeing the reconciliation of bank accounts and monitoring cash balances. Assist in the management of investments, working with treasury personnel to optimize cash resources.
* Grant Accounting: Oversee financial reporting for grants and sponsored programs, ensuring compliance with grant terms and conditions. Assist with preparing and submitting reports to funding agencies, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
* Staff Supervision and Training: Provide leadership and guidance to the accounting team, including overseeing daily work, providing training, and mentoring junior staff. Assist in hiring and evaluating accounting personnel.
* System Implementation and Improvement: Support system enhancements and process improvements within the financial software and reporting systems. Assist with the implementation of new accounting policies or software systems to streamline operations.
* Other Duties: As assigned by the Controller and/or CFO.
