SUMMARY The Assistant Controller assists and supports the Corporate Controller with: reconciliations, accounts payable, fixed assets, tax, audit (financial, internal controls, and operational), and regulatory reporting functions of the Bank to ensure proper recording and control of Bank accounting records; preparation of financial statements; reporting of federal, state, and local tax reporting and compliance; accurate and timely board reporting and regulatory filings; and shareholder records, including quarterly distributions.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establishes, communicates, and enforces organizational accounting and reporting standards to maintain the Bank's compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and legal/regulatory requirements. Stays current on accounting standards and regulatory pronouncements.
- Establishes and maintains an appropriate and effective Bank-wide internal control structure based on criteria for effective internal control over financial reporting as stipulated by COSO guidelines (Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission), current auditing standards, and current legal/regulatory standards.
- Prepares timely monthly close-out of books for the Bank and all subsidiaries and reviews the general ledger and financial statements of the Bank and all subsidiaries to ensure ongoing propriety.
- Assists in preparation of financial statements and required notes for external audit.
- Serve as the primary liaison between internal audit and operational areas of the Bank, ensuring internal controls are appropriately evaluated and management responses timely implemented.
- Prepares timely account reconciliation and posting for all general ledger accounts including review and approval by the Corporate Controller and/or CFO.
- Prepares timely monthly analysis including net interest margin yield analysis, interest income and expense rate volume variance, non-interest income, and expense variance to prior periods and budget.
- Researches and identifies significant budget and prior period variances and provides detailed explanations.
- Ensures proper equity method of accounting for investment in subsidiaries and maintains roll forward schedule for investment in subsidiaries and stockholders' equity for all banks.
- Maintains complete and accurate shareholder records, properly implementing stock transactions, paying quarterly dividends to shareholders, and filing year-end tax statements with IRS (Form 1099-DIV).
- Monitor dividends for N.B.C. Bancshares in Pawhuska, Inc. and all subsidiaries to be paid to the holding company and distributions to shareholders in accordance with board-approved policy; provides distribution statements and payments to all shareholders in accordance with their individual instructions; prepares wire transfer instructions to make required distributions from subsidiaries to parent company; and reviews applicable G/L entries and reconciliations for earnings distributions.
- Works with external tax firm as directed by the Corporate Controller and CFO to achieve accurate and timely completion of federal income tax, state franchise tax, local property tax, and other tax filings, as and when required; gathers and prepares schedules and provides assistance as needed; ensures proper accrual and reporting of current and deferred tax liabilities in accordance with GAAP and government pronouncements.
- Ensures proper and timely payment of all real and personal property taxes for all banks and subsidiaries.
- Gathers requested information and provides assistance for auditors and regulators as directed by the Corporate Controller and CFO.
- Files regulatory applications for new branches, mergers/acquisitions, etc. with the State Department of Banking, Federal Reserve Bank, and other regulatory agencies, as applicable.
- Produces and distributes annual meeting packages, prepares required proxies, coordinates proxy counts, and prepares meeting minutes as needed.
- Recognizes red flags, scams, fraud, phishing, etc.
- Stays current on applicable banking regulations and security procedures and practices to prevent fraud or other bank losses and to comply with regulatory requirements.
- Performs responsibilities during Bank hours by being physically present in the Bank an average of 40 hours each week based on business needs.
- Travels between branches as needed.
- Performs other responsibilities as assigned by management.
RequirementsQUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Accounting required.
- CPA license or CPA eligible and seeking licensure preferred.
- Experience: 5 years of related accounting experience in the banking industry (community banking preferred) and/or public accounting, primarily in attestation services.
- Valid driver's license, proof of insurance, qualifying motor vehicle record report, and reliable transportation.
- Experienced in preparing Bank financial statements and related notes in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles for audit and annual report.
- Knowledgeable in treasury function including cash flow management and banking relations, understanding of asset liability management issues.
- Proficient communicator to Bank staff, executive management, and senior executives/Partners/Bank examiners internal and external to the Bank.
- Proficient with spreadsheets, MS Excel, and MS Word.
- Proficient with financials systems including GL core system applications, accounts payable, fixed assets, and regulatory reporting packages.
- Experience with BlackLine FCM, SAP Concur, and Alteryx Designer preferred.
- Working knowledge in SQL with the ability to access, analyze, and utilize structured data for integration with ancillary systems, conducting research, and generating insightful reports.
