Position Description
General Overview
Under general direction; prepares and presents cases in court and before administrative agencies; researches and prepares briefs and opinions; negotiates resolutions to cases; prepares a variety of legal documents; supervises law clerks/interns; maintains a working knowledge of the law.
Required Qualifications
* Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below.*Licensed to practice law in Ohio and admitted to practice law before the U.S. District Court, Northern District of OhioTwo (2) years as a practicing attorney is preferred

Job Duties
* The duties listed below are intended to depict tasks performed by this classification.*Supervises the activities of the clerical personnel and law clerks/interns (e.g. assigns matter to research, reviews work to ensure accuracy and completeness, trains and evaluates employee work performance); assists with the development of departmental work procedures; makes recommendations for policy revisions.Performs a variety of responsible administrative work; participates in internal and external conferences and meetings; maintains records and prepares reports; answers correspondence; serves as a liaison with other agencies and the community.Civil Division evaluates cases; prepares and presents arguments before courts and administrative agencies (e.g. State Personnel Board of Review, State Employment Relations Board, Ohio Industrial Commission, etc.) in defense of or on behalf of elected and appointed officials in civil matters; questions and/or cross examines witnesses, defendants, etc.; provides legal advice, consultation , and research on a variety of legal issues to agencies, boards and elected officials, townships, and school systems; issues formal opinions as requested and necessary; conducts out-of-court negotiations to develop acceptable settlements; analyzes and interprets law; drafts and reviews contracts, leases, agreements, and other legal documents; performs research assignments on legal matters; prepares opinions, briefs, pleadings, and other documents; serves as a liaison with various county agencies and attends meetings as necessary and required; handles civil appellate matters; maintains civil docket to ensure that work is accomplished with required time frames.Criminal Division prepares and tries cases before various courts; reviews issues; participates in pre-hearing conferences; conducts out-of-court negotiations issues subpoenas and other appropriate orders related to the discovery process; appears before grand juries to present evidence; questions witnesses, defendants, etc. ;meets with law enforcement personnel to review cases, determine charges, and prepare cases for trial; provides a variety of legal advice to various police agencies (e.g., Sheriff, townships, etc.); monitors cases to ensure that all time requirements relating to criminal matters are strictly adhered to; maintains assigned docket and provides assistance to court personnel with journal entries; conducts research to prepare briefs for submission to the 9th District Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court; reviews and analyzes state and federal laws and various cases; prepares documentation related to appeals within established time-frames; prepares and presents arguments in court, meets with judges, prosecutors, and other attorneys, and county personnel to discuss casesChild Support Enforcement Agency presents child support enforcement agency cases; researches, analyzes, evaluates, and prepares cases for court; formulates legal opinions; drafts various legal documents; provides information to and responds to inquiries concerning CSEA matters; interviews agency clients and individuals who are delinquent in child support payments; negotiates settlements and establishes collection procedures; conducts hearings; ensures that work is accomplished within required time framesDelinquent Tax Division provides representation to county officials in taxing matters; reviews foreclosures and Board of Revision matters to ensure compliance with legal requirements; conducts research to prepares briefs, motions, memoranda, etc.; prepares for and presents cases in court and before administrative agencies; prepares and submits evidence; interviews and cross examines witnesses; complete necessary documentation related to, and files foreclosures and other suits aimed at, the collection of taxes; conducts negotiations with property owners or their designees concerning the values of property and appraisal procedures; maintains a current working knowledge concerning real estate appraisal matters
