Job DetailsJob Location Methodist University Location - Fayetteville, NC Position Type Full Time Faculty Description Methodist University seeks a collaborative and innovative individual to serve as the Inaugural Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills Development for its new School of Medicine in partnership with Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayetteville, NC. The Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine (MCFV) is an applicant program with the LCME with an anticipated start date of Summer 2026 for its charter class. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to be socially accountable, community-engaged, evidence-based, compassionate, equity-focused physician leaders who will mitigate health disparities and improve health outcomes in southeastern NC or wherever they may practice. MCFV is seeking a creative, forward-thinking, student-focused educational leader to develop and lead clinical skills education, a standardized patient program, point of care ultrasound, and simulation education within the fully integrated foundational and clinical phases of the medical education program. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills Education will ensure innovative clinical skills development, ultrasound and simulation training across all four years, and assessment strategies are implemented while applying best practices and utilizing up-to-date technology through all phases of the curriculum. The position will also support the development of clinical cases to be used in the Foundation Phase curriculum. The incumbent will oversee the MCFV Director of Simulation and the Standardized Patient Program Director and collaborate with a highly skilled simulation team at the Cape Fear Valley Health simulation center. The incumbent will have the opportunity to pursue scholarly interests and contribute to the medical school via participation in service-related activities including committee/workgroup membership and other volunteer efforts. Responsibilities include:
- Design, oversee, and coordinate delivery of clinical skills development, ultrasound and simulation training, and assessment strategies.
- Design, oversee, and coordinate pre-clerkship OSCEs in the M1 and M2 years, end-of-clerkship OSCEs in the M3 year, and the summative clinical skills OSCE in the M4 year.
- Collaborate with the foundational sciences, clinical education, and assessment teams to design, develop, and implement our longitudinal clinical skills education and assessment within a fully integrated curriculum.
- Develop innovative assessments to evaluate students' clinical competence in history taking, physical examination skills, differential diagnoses development, medical documentation (H&P, SOAP notes), use of AI-supported platforms for patient care, and patient-centered communication.
- Select, write, and update cases and checklists
- Collaborate with the SP program director to train standardized patients, grade exams, and develop a unified standardized patient program.
- Utilize clinical skills and simulation curricular/educational technology platforms (i.e. Simulation IQ, Blackboard, Progress IQ, One45, B-line etc.) to collect data and monitor students' progress in achieving annual milestones and competence.
- Develop and implement remediation plans for students who are not meeting expectations or performing poorly in clinical skills /OSCEs.
- Teach and facilitate case-based discussions throughout the curriculum's Foundation phase.
- Participation in other related School of Medicine committees
- Participation in medical education research and/or other scholarly activities.
