JOB SUMMARY

The assistant dean of students is a key contributor to a dynamic and collaborative Dean of Students team that is committed to the mission and convictions of the University of St. Thomas and to student success. The Division of Student Affairs aligns its work with the Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities. This person serves as the lead case manager for students of concern and works closely with staff and faculty across the university to support and retain students. The assistant dean works with academic deans in response to student behavioral concerns in the classroom. The assistant dean also responds to student complaints and concerns, advocates for students, and facilitates conflict resolution and mediation with appropriate individuals. This position also serves as a resource and navigational guide for students in need of basic resources and as the administrator for the emergency grant program.

Other duties include the role of family liaison, monitoring and editing content for the St. Thomas family portal, and assisting in the design and implementation of the family orientation program. The assistant dean also chairs student conduct boards, serves on the behavioral intervention team, chairs a cross-departmental CARE team, and rotates emergency on-call responsibilities with other staff in the Dean of Students Office. The assistant dean serves on university committees as assigned.

This is an in-person position with the opportunity for some remote work in January and June.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Chairs the CARE team and case manages at-risk undergraduate and graduate student population. Weekly meetings with team members are required. Follow-up and support for students whose behavior indicates they are having difficulty either in the classroom, social environment or residence hall. Coordinate family support meetings when appropriate.
  • Initiates action or follow-up on calls/alerts from students, faculty, or staff that require advocacy or emergency response. Serves as campus resource for students navigating systems for basic need resources and administers emergency grant program. Serves with on call duty responsibilities weekend emergency response to students. Response action may include contact with upper administrators, Public Safety, faculty members, or staff.
  • Initiate or respond to calls from family members of students who require supportive response and/or advocacy. Monitor and approve content for St. Thomas Family Portal. Assist with creation and implementation of parent summer orientation program.
  • Assist with disciplinary processes for undergraduate and graduate students. This may include serving on conduct boards or assisting with investigations.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelors degree in education or a related field
    • Five years of experience in student life/student affairs in higher education to include experience dealing with student support and student well-being, university student conduct systems, restorative justice practices, conflict resolution and mediation

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Masters Degree in Higher Education Student Personnel Development, Student Affairs, Social Work, Counseling, Pastoral Studies or an equivalency in human services
    • At least three years of experience with case management, student support, and emergency crisis response

    An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.

    Bilingual language skills preferred.
