Job Description:
DescriptionThe Canadian County Juvenile Detention Center is housed inside the Gary E. Miller Children's Justice Center. It serves as a safe and secure holding facility for juveniles who have been arrested and are waiting to proceed through the court process or who have not yet been placed. The detention center is not a treatment facility, but mental health programs and trainings inform staff in providing trauma-informed care. A very strict and structured but fair philosophy helps residents see the benefits of staying out of trouble with the law, staying off drugs, and staying in school.Title of position: Detention Assistant DirectorDescription of essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Act as an on-call administrator on weekends, holidays, and in the absence of the Director
  • Supervise the referral, admission, and release process for Detention/Sanctions Program
  • Provide assistance and guidance to residents/detainees and their families when child in being detained
  • Establish a visiting and phone call schedule for each resident/detainee
  • Responsible for fiscal statements and reports for the Child Nutrition Program
  • Conduct group-counseling sessions with all residents/detainees on a regular basis
  • Assist the Detention Director with staff supervision, scheduling, hiring, and evaluation
  • Provide crisis intervention on as as-needed basis
  • Manage resident/detainee grievance procedures and act as the grievance coordinator
  • Coordinate with the Detention/Sanction Teacher, Detention/Sanction shift supervisors, and the Detention/Sanction Administrative Assistant on program and daily operations of the Sanction Program
  • Work with each resident/detainee on an individual basis
  • Establish and supervise training program for new Detention/Sanctions employees
  • Establish a good working relationship with the residents/detainees' probation officer and provide written reports to the probation officer and courts upon request
  • Ensure that the detention/sanction facility is properly stocked with supplies
  • Assume other responsibilities when appropriate or as directed by the Detention Director
Qualifications for position:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred; OR 60 college hours plus 5 years of direct care in a detention facility.
  • Must pass background, drug and alcohol screening
Supervisory relationships:This position reports directly to the Director of Detention; this position is responsible for supervising the Detention Administrative Assistant, the Shift Supervisors, and Detention Officers. In absence of Detention Director and the Sanctions Assistant Director, the Detention Assistant Director assumes all responsibility for Detention.Skills and knowledge required:The individual must be physically able to restrain a juvenile should it become necessary, have adequate visual and auditory skills to supervise residents/detainees; be physically able to stand on their feet for an entire eight-hour shift; and have necessary skills to operate the security devices in a safe and competent manner.Prior experience required:Minimum of three years of experience in corrections or childcare, OR two years of experience in a related fieldPersonal qualities:Individual should have sufficient interpersonal skills to work closely with both professional peers and resident/detainees.Amount of travel and other special conditions or requirements:Occasional travel may be required in the performance of duties and/or training.Work Schedule:Required 40-hour work week; this position requires some evenings and holidays. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
