Posting DetailsPosition Information Job Title Assistant Director for Library Engagement and Enrichment Summary As John Carroll University's Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center prepares to re-launch our full array of new and returning services following a $15M, multi-year renovation designed to create new learning environments for students, the library invites applicants for an Assistant Director for Library Engagement and Enrichment who will be responsible for building dynamic new programming to engage students and enrich their learning experience. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the planning, implementation, and oversight of key service areas in the library which focus on engagement and student learning - academic tutoring, research & reference, and creativity & experimentation.The Assistant Director for Library Engagement and Enrichment is responsible for building dynamic new programming to engage students and enrich their learning experience at the Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center. The Assistant Director leads the planning, implementation, and oversight of key service areas in the library which focus on engagement and student learning - academic tutoring, research & reference, and creativity & experimentation.Reporting to the University Librarian - Director of the Library, the Assistant Director for Library Engagement and Enrichment, a twelve-month professional staff position, develops and leads outreach initiatives tailored to all students, and collaborates with library colleagues and stakeholders across the campus to provide meaningful & welcoming activities and services that foster student learning and a sense of belonging. This position also teaches course-integrated information literacy and library research instruction classes and provides research & reference assistance to students and faculty.The Assistant Director for Library Engagement and Enrichment draws on strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships & partnerships across the campus with students, faculty and staff. The successful candidate is a representative of the Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center which requires a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the library, the curriculum, and across the campus community.Priority will be given to applications received by 11/15/2024.Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee the library's established peer-to-peer academic tutoring service (Learning Commons). This includes direct supervision of a Graduate Assistant who oversees the day-to-day management of the service and student employees.
- Manage the library's new peer-to-peer research & reference service, a new Learning Commons service. Includes hiring, training, and supervising undergraduate student employees.
- Develop, coordinate, and host programming & workshops focusing on creativity and experimentation for a new dedicated space in the library.
- Arrange for traditional library events and programs for students, faculty, and staff (e.g. new student orientation, finals week, wellness programs, enrollment fairs).
- Review and assessment services and programs.
- Develop relationships and engage with library-building partners and other University departments.
- Teach course-integrated information literacy and library research instruction throughout the University's curriculum and programs, including the creation of asynchronous learning tools & objects. This may include liaison assignments.
- Provide in-depth research & reference assistance to support student and faculty scholarship
- Engage in activities to support the mission and vision of John Carroll University
- Participation in professional development to stay aware of new teaching and library research tools for services, outreach & engagement, and information literacy.
- Serve on library and John Carroll University campus committees, task forces, and working groups as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in library and information science, or equivalent.
- 1-2 years of professional experience in an academic or public library.
- Strong understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and creating an inclusive campus environment.
- Demonstrated experience planning, implementation, and overseeing library programming and/or services.
- Knowledge of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
- Experience teaching information literacy and critical thinking skills.
- Experience providing research and reference assistance via a variety of methods (e.g. in person, email, chat, text).
- Interest and ability to explore and incorporate arts and emerging technologies into learning and research support
- Ability to work flexibly and creatively both with others in a team environment as well as independently.
- Successful experience collaborating on multi-department, cross-organizational initiatives.
- Proficiency in Google G-suite; MS Word and Excel.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, collaborative, written and verbal communication skills
- Possess and demonstrate the ability to work with diverse constituencies and have excellent skills in oral and written communication
- Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience training and supervising undergraduate student employees.
- Familiarity with Springshare products (e.g. LibGuides, LibAnswers).
- Familiarity with Student Information Systems and Learning Management Systems, possibly Canvas.
- Experience with teaching or tutoring.
- Examples of initiative, resourcefulness, and creativity.

University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.Physical Requirements Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.Hours Full Time FLSACompensation & Benefits Starting salary will be $62,000 - $72,000.
