Department SummaryDesign and Project Management is a subdivision of Facilities Management with an annual operating budget of 34 million dollars. DPM is responsible for renovation, design and project management for projects upto 3 million dollars. The 35 FTE include architects, design professionals, project managers and superintendents.Position SummaryThe incumbent is responsible for assisting the Director of DPM in managing the architectural and project management service unit, providing guidance and oversight for execution of energy conservation initiatives as well as planning and execution of deferred maintenance/infrastructure improvements for the department's Utilities division. The incumbent assists the Director in the development and implementation of a campus-wide strategy focused on infrastructure improvement and aesthetics which directly contributes to a positive visual experience that all key stakeholders may have while on campus. Recurring project budget responsibility is approximately $100-$150M per year. Projects range in scope between $100k and $12M with a projected annual volume of approximately 150. High impact projects include the construction of laboratory space to enhance the possibility of attracting key targeted hires; reconstruction of medical facilities/operating suite to accommodate new MRI medical technology and equipment; and providing overall design improvements to classroom and general facilities visited by undergraduate, graduate students, parents, and external constituents. The incumbent has direct oversight and is responsible for supervision and the project management service unit in the development of renovation projects. Continually interacts with staff to help develop overall strategies for project execution, scopes of work, schedules, budgets and provides key guidance with respect to technical aspects of the project as necessary to ensure work can be executed without delay.Salary & Compensation*UCLA provides a full pay range.   • Ability to employ strong listening and interpersonal skills including diplomacy, tact, and assertiveness, when necessary.
  • Supervisory skills that include delegating responsibility, time management, training, communicating performance expectations, and evaluating staff, and taking disciplinary action.
  • Superior writing skills using correct English text and grammar.
  • Skill in adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and computing percentages, reading and comprehending basic accounting balance sheets, reports, and University ledgers. (Required)
  • Ability to successfully speak on a one-to-one basis or in small groups to all levels of personnel from directors to crafts employees, using appropriate grammar and vocabulary to convey and receive relevant information. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of construction specifications, technical drawings, construction methodology, scheduling techniques and skill in preparing itemized cost estimates for assigned work. (Required)
  • Ability to develop two-dimensional drawings and construction specifications to clearly illustrate scopes of work. (Required)
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Type I, II, III, IV, and V constructions methodologies. Working knowledge of and ability to apply California Administrative Codes as applicable to construction, including Titles 19, 22, and 24. (Required)
  • Competent working knowledge of current construction costs as adjusted yearly. (Required)
  • Ability to conduct on-site visual inspections of projects involving walking, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, stooping, crouching, and balancing including roof inspections and inspections in other precarious locations. (Required)
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions when conducting visual inspections including noise, fumes, and dust. (Required)
  • Thorough working knowledge of Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and Office of State Architect regulations and approval processes. (Required)
  • Thorough working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration general safety rules, equipment, and clothing when conducting on-site visual inspections. (Required)
  • Ability to plan and schedule several jobs simultaneously, and when required, work as necessary to ensure deadlines and project schedules are not jeopardized. (Required)
  • Ability to focus attention and concentration on specific issues and follow through until resolved with minimal direction. (Required)
  • Ability to perform under frequent interruptions or distractions and balancing fluctuating workloads and several projects simultaneously. (Required)
  • Analytical ability to synthesize a variety of information, occasionally minimal information, and make sound decisions appropriate to the situation. (Required)

  • Working knowledge of PCs using MS Office, Access, Excel, and computerized project maintenance systems. (Required)
