Primary Function & Position Overview

The Assistant Director is an integral member of the Academic Team, responsible for driving strong outcomes for all learners. The Assistant Director will implement an exceptionally high-level and academically rigorous approach to a content vertical across our grades. The Assistant Director will have a major role in shaping the academic culture of the academic department. Candidates should have a deep understanding of their content area, as well as experience teaching and leading adults.

The Assistant Director will report to one of the Network Directors of Content at Public Preparatory Network, and work closely with members of the Academic Team and school-based teams, in particular, Academic Directors, Principals, and teachers at all levels. The Assistant Director is a highly motivated and collaborative leader who takes initiative to solve problems and address challenges through an equity lens, centering the needs of all scholars on the pathway to achieving their full potential. This person is deeply passionate about instructional design and development of adults, and is a content guru with proven high quality results in the classroom, both for proficiency and growth. The Assistant Director models the core values of scholarship, excellence, community, and integrity and embodies a growth-mindset.

Duties & Responsibilities

Domain I: Vision and Supporting Systems

  • Support the network vision for instruction, and aligned priorities, and contribute to the development of clear programmatic recommendations for school leaders
  • Support the overall vision for a culture of excellence, growth and responsibility for all students, families and staff
  • Model the core values of scholarship, excellence, community, and integrity as well as network-wide norms, and beliefs that promote an inclusive culture, creating an environment where all stakeholders are valued and respected for who they are
  • Collaborate with the Academics Team to develop and monitor short and long term goals and priorities aligned to network and school-wide vision, ensuring strong student growth for all scholars
  • Create systems for personal organization & time management that allow them to prioritize the most important actions aligned to vision & goals and meet deadlines

Domain II: Rigorous Instruction and Learning

  • Adapt and create curricular resources to support teacher implementation of network curriculum
  • Audit, upgrade and when necessary write curriculum to ensure alignment between scope & sequence, assessments, and network needs based on data
  • Audit, upgrade and create network wide progress monitoring assessments
  • Audit, upgrade and create network wide test prep materials
  • Manage and maintain scope and sequence creation and updating as needed
  • Create and implement teacher and leader development sessions to advance the implementation of Public Prep's instructional program
  • Drive teacher effectiveness by training staff to plan for and execute curriculum

Domain III: Drive Results

  • Deeply analyze student achievement data (e.g., student work samples, quizzes, interim assessments, state tests) to determine how to better develop materials and develop targeted, high quality teacher training
  • Plan and facilitate exemplary professional development for leaders and teachers to ensure they achieve high quality results for our scholars
  • Utilize student culture and academic achievement data, student work, teacher practice and planning to identify, diagnose and take a course of action to ensure significant student growth
  • Uphold a culture of scholarship and critical thinking that will prepare scholars to excel in college
  • Socialize research-based, culturally responsive practices across the network to ensure an equitable education for all of our students
  • Support the Directors with various ad-hoc projects and duties as needed

Domain IV: Authentic Leadership

  • Recognize and consider how identity, beliefs, values and behaviors impact relationships and network-wide culture when addressing opportunities or challenges
  • Establish trust and foster collaboration by building strong relationships
  • Create investment in the network vision, goals and systems, and motivate all stakeholders to action
  • Maintain visibility in the community, exemplifying the Public Prep core values of scholarship, merit, community, and responsibility

Domain V: Strategic Talent Management

  • Build a network-wide culture of instructional excellence across all schools, inclusive of high levels of rigor and motivation, authentic engagement and student ownership of learning, and a strong sense of connectedness and belonging for all students
  • Coach and develop instructional staff through a variety of means including the leading of professional development, walkthroughs, observations

Additional Qualifications

  • At least three (3) years of demonstrated success improving student outcomes at an elementary or secondary district or charter school, preferably as a high performing teacher leader, school-based coach, or professional developer
  • A record of high achievement in the classroom, with measurable student growth results
  • Depth of knowledge in your given content area (Bachelors in your content, education, or related field; graduate degree preferred);
  • An M.A., Ed.M or Master s degree in Education and/or Content Leadership, preferredNew York State Teaching CertificationFluency in Spanish, preferred

Public Prep offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, internal equity, and budgeted amount for the role. The salary for this position starts at $95,000 - $110,000. We offer a comprehensive benefits package. It includes Oxford Medical, United Dental/Vision, life insurance, parenting benefits, flexible spending account, generous paid time off, commuter benefits, referral bonuses, professional development, and a 403(b) package with a 5% employer match.
