DescriptionJob SummaryWVU Foundation is enjoying its most productive fundraising years in its history, raising over $282 million in FY2024. Corporate, Foundation and NGO donors represent $189 million of FY24 production. As WVU and the WVU Foundation prepare to begin a Capital Campaign, we are seeking an accomplished grant writer to join the dynamic and fast-paced WVU Foundation Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations.The Assistant Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations-Grant Writer is a new position that will play a pivotal role in securing funding to support the university's initiatives, academic programs, and community projects. This position involves identifying potential funding sources, developing proposals, and coordinating with faculty and staff to ensure successful grant submissions. The Grant Writer will work closely with the WVU Foundation Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations and to advance the university's mission and strategic goals through effective grant acquisition. The Grant Writer manages the entire grant lifecycle, from prospect research and proposal writing to post-award reporting and compliance.The incumbent will collaborate closely with the Executive Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Senior Director of Development of WVU Medicine Children's, and WVU faculty and staff, to advance the goals and objectives of West Virginia University and its affiliated organizations, including WVU Medicine.WVU Foundation supports the entire WVU community in building relationships with key constituencies and securing the financial resources the university needs to continue its ascent. Your core responsibilities will include:Conduct prospect research on private funding opportunities at a local, state and national level that align with WVU and WVU Foundation's mission and funding priorities.Generate high-quality letters of intent, proposals, narratives, applications and supporting documents in response to solicitations consistent with all policies and procedures of WVU Foundation and the requirements and guidelines of the prospective organizational donor.Coordinates, develops, and processes grant applications from conceptual to submission stage while working closely with faculty and staff throughout all phases in consultation with position leadership.Meet regularly with stakeholders to understand programming currently underway as well as discuss current and new funding opportunities.Become familiar with grant management policies of the WVU Foundation and the WVU Office of Sponsored Programs.Meet regularly with the Executive Director CFR and the Senior Director of Development of WVU Medicine Children's to ensure activities are aligned with the programmatic goals of the University.Work with sensitive information, maintain confidentiality and use discretion.Be a vested partner with the mission and vision of the CFR team, working to continuously improve team operations.QualificationsEducation, Experience and Competencies: Minimum QualificationsBachelor's Degree or equivalent in Communications, English, Journalism or other humanities degree with one to three years of grant writing, preferably in a higher education environment.Comprehensive understanding of grant writing processes and best practices.Familiarity with different types of grants and funding mechanisms.Ability to work effectively under pressure and with short timelines.Proficiency in research, interpreting and analyzing diverse data from diverse source materials.Exceptional writing skills with the ability to produce clear, compelling and persuasive grant proposals.Strong editing and proofreading skills to ensure accuracy and coherence.Analytical skills to interpret funding guidelines, eligibility requirements and funding priorities.Strong organizational skills to keep track of application deadlines, submission processes and follow-up activities.High level of attention to detail to ensure that all aspects of the grant proposal meet the donor's requirements.Knowledge of applicable computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.Motivated self-starter with the ability to work collaboratively and independently with purpose and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.Preferred QualificationsMinimum of 12 to 18 months of grant writing experienceExperience in a higher education or academic health system organization.Proven track record of successful grant proposals and funding procurement.Proficiency in project management with the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlinesWorking knowledge of grant compliance, financial management, and reporting.Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: N/APhysical requirementsWhile performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. Evening and weekend work outside the standard 8:15am to 5pm schedule will occasionally be required.Must provide own transportation to off-site events and meetings.Work Environment: The position is expected to be in-person primarily, but over time, hybrid may be acceptable in alignment with the WVUF work/telecommuting policy.
