Job OverviewThe Assistant Director of Library Media Services will plan, develop, coordinate, implement and provide oversight to all functions of district-wide library media services. The incumbent will form a strong collaboration with Curriculum and Instruction to ensure that library resources and services support the delivery of the District curriculum. Ensure quality delivery of services, including: digital resources, library program policies and procedures, staff development, teacher center makerspace, professional library and partnership initiatives.Position DescriptionEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLibrary Programs
  • Develop and facilitate professional learning for Library Media Specialist on the effective implementation of a school libraries aligned with the Texas School Library Standards
  • Develop and implement practices and procedures for the efficient and effective operation of the Library/Media Services (LMS) program to provide availability and effective use of resources
  • Supervise maintenance of required accessing, processing, inventory procedures, and record keeping for campus Library/Media Center (LMC) holdings
  • Guide campus and district level personnel on district, state and national program standards and work toward the attainment and maintenance of those standards
  • Facilitate the acquisition of basic collections of books and AV media, and assure that the collections are totally processed and ready for use when the building is occupied
  • Participate in developing policies dealing with collection development, media selection, and review processes for reconsideration of media
  • Collect and analyze data to periodically evaluate the school library media program for continuous improvement against measurable goals and communicate program results with direct supervisor
Administrative Support
  • Manage the Library Media Service budget as well as the allocation and use of campus library budgets
  • Recommend sources and types of media and equipment. Evaluate, recommend, and oversee the implementation of the District's digital resources
  • Coordinate activities with Purchasing Department to determine best bids for books, media and equipment
  • Plan with appropriate personnel to assure adequate and functional facilities, furniture and equipment for new library media centers
  • Effectively manage a large school division library/media services unit and to train and supervise others
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional and clerical staff and with the general public
  • Keep current on hardware and software changes as they apply to library technology
Instruction
  • Collaborates with Curriculum and Instruction to ensure campus libraries have the facilities, resources and materials needed to support campus instruction
  • Facilitate utilization of the Standards and Guidelines for Texas to engage in regular assessment of each School Library Program and make recommendations to ensure a continuous cycle of improvement.
  • Coordinate, develop, and implement an information and technology literacy skills curriculum integrated with subject area curriculum through partnerships with curriculum staff
  • Facilitate the development of school libraries that support literacy development and inquiry.
  • Establish and implement a long-range professional learning plan for school librarians and teachers that promotes the mission of Texas School Libraries.
  • Collaborate with Curriculum and Instruction to develop digital literacy curriculum, tools, and to provide teacher training to support the development of digital literacy in all students
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs to ensure integration of district curriculum with library resources
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Assist in the process of recruiting, screening, interviewing, and hiring of assigned staff
  • Initiate personnel actions including documentation and termination under the guidance of Human Resources
  • Conduct performance appraisals of assigned staff
  • Post, screen, interview, create qualified pool of Librarian candidates for campus principals

  • Master's degree in Library Information Science or Information Science
  • Valid Texas Librarian Certification
  • Valid Texas Mid-Management or Principal Certification Preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years as a Librarian
  • Minimum of 2 years in an oversight or supervisory capacity
  • Maintain effective working relationships with school officials, school administrators, School Board, associates, and the general public
  • Effective leadership practices
  • Organizational and management strategies as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs
  • Thorough knowledge of the Texas Education Code and ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Ability to use computer technology in administrative and educational settings
  • Excellent organizational ability
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, problem-solving and consensus-building expertise, and excellent human relations skills
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities effectively
  • Knowledge of Information Literacy Standards and District curriculum
  • Methods, materials, and techniques employed in the administration of a staff development program
  • Knowledge of research methods and sources of information related to library media services
  • Integration of technology into the curriculum
  • Library programming and instruction and effective teaching practice
