Job DescriptionPURPOSE OF POSITION:Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing or a designee, the individual assumes administrative responsibilities and clinical oversight for Patient Care Services. The Assistant Director of Nursing is an integral member of Nursing Services Administration, will assist in coordinating and evaluating of nursing services, patient care and operational activities under the direction of the Director.
Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Nursing:- Promotes a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace, which promotes customer service and enhances and furthers the hospital's Mission, Vision and Value statement.
- Assists in developing policies, objectives and standards of nursing service and education.
- Assists in the planning, organization and conduction of nursing education program.
- Patient Care Management/Unit Operations
- Collaborates with the Director of Nursing in planning and developing programs to improve patient care and employee performance.
- Periodically monitors employee's performance relative to patient care and nursing practice, e.g. compliance to policy/procedures relative to patient care assignments and the related documentation, narcotic count, code cart assessment sheet, medication administration and documentation, etc.
- Communicates patient care and service related problems on the tour to appropriate individuals timely, Assists in corrective actions/follow-up
- Makes frequent, purposeful rounds with/without HEAD NURSE to assess units.
- Evaluates staffing plan and ensures that staffing is adequate to meet patient care needs.
- Collaborates with peers and head nurse in developing mechanisms that improves continuous feedback relative to the current status of patient care/nursing practice issues in order to comply with hospital policy/procedure, regulatory agency mandates and standards.
- Meets frequently with peers (nursing leaders/personnel) in order to:
- Maintain open channels of communication.
- Explore resolutions to problems.
- Review/analyze quality improvement reports and effectiveness of corrective action plans/follow-up.
- Periodically assess/review the master staffing plan.
Minimum Qualifications1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience.
