The Office of Global Affairs has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director of Study Abroad to join their team.

The Assistant Director of Study Abroad provides leadership for UW Tacoma's study abroad programs and other global learning opportunities. The Assistant Director reports directly to the Executive Director of the Office of Global Affairs. This position oversees the administration of study abroad programming at UW Tacoma, provides support for faculty developing study abroad opportunities, manages study abroad budgets and coordinates risk management in collaboration with the UW's Global Travel Security Manager.

This position will help connect our diverse student body to transformational global learning opportunities and support our students' development into globally-minded, culturally competent citizens. This position is responsible for revenue and expenditures for study abroad related budgets in the amount of approximately $250,000, including state-funded and fee-based budgets, and tuition waivers. The position also provides oversight for fiscal operations of all study abroad programs and ensures activities are carried out in a fiscally responsible manner.

The position supports approximately 150 student participants and 12 faculty-led study abroad programs per year. These numbers are expected to grow. They ensure the health, safety, and wellness of students, faculty, and staff who are participating in global learning opportunities. Many of our students are traditionally underrepresented in international education, and this position will emphasize equitable access to study abroad for our students, a core mission of the campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Study Abroad Leadership (45%)

Supports the development and implementation of UW Tacoma study abroad programs and other global learning opportunities

Works with faculty to create high-impact study abroad programs that align with UW Tacoma's strategic plan, its social justice focus, and student interests

Advises faculty program directors on program proposal process, budget components, pre-departure orientation, and post-program assessment

Develops infrastructure and policies to support study abroad programs and independent learning abroad

Coordinates the effective implementation of UW-wide and UW Tacoma study abroad policies and procedures, including risk management and crisis response.

Serves as primary first responder to study abroad emergencies at UW Tacoma and coordinates communication to University leadership and other units as needed

Responds to Study Abroad Code of Conduct violations, makes recommendations to university leadership about conduct proceedings and disciplinary sanctions, and coordinates with university disciplinary processes

Manages Global Initiatives Fellowship program applications, administration, etc

Participates in education abroad professional community meetings, conferences, etc

Applies for grants to create new study abroad programs

Oversees efforts to connect students who are traditionally underrepresented in international education to study abroad

Other duties as assigned

Study Abroad Advising & Management (30%):

Advises UW Tacoma students on study abroad programming opportunities on all three UW campuses, including independent learning options;

Supervises staff (which could include professional and/or student employees who support relevant programming, advising, and outreach), including training associated with advising and outreach strategies, evaluating their performance, and co-creating professional development plans

Advises students on scholarship and fellowship opportunities for study abroad;

Manages the study abroad portion of the OGA website;

Other Projects as assigned.

Study Abroad Program Operations (25%):

Provides strategic oversight over study abroad program and administrative fee budgets

Establishes program policies, procedures and processes, such as study abroad application systems, pre-departure requirements for study abroad participants, and a study abroad emergency refund policy

Ensures students complete all program applications and pre-departure requirements, in collaboration with the UW Study Abroad Office in Seattle;

Develops and implement pre-departure orientation and re-entry programming for study abroad participants;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in International or Higher Education, Communications, Global Affairs, Business, or a related field, plus four (4) years' experience in international education, study abroad, or other student services

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Pro-active, detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to multi-task;

Excellent written and oral communication skills;

Strong computer skills; experience with Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint;

Demonstrated ability to work with students and/or colleagues from a variety of cultural, ethnic, educational, and economic backgrounds.

Experience advising students for Study Abroad

Experience supervising students and/or staff

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in related field.

5 or more years of experience working in international education or a related field within higher education;

Budget management experience;

Experience living, working, or studying abroad;

Experience with StudioAbroad office management software
