Job Description:

GAI Consultants, Inc is seeking an Assistant Engineering Manager to work with our West Virginia offices within our Transportation Business Unit. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment that will utilize their related work experience to develop professionally into a well-rounded engineer with the ability to grow in today's global environment. Responsibilities:

  • Design and prepare plans and specifications for transportation structures, including highway and railroad bridges, retaining walls, box culverts, and other miscellaneous structures per AASHTO (The American Association of State Highway and Transportation) and WVDOH (West Virginia Division of Highways) requirements.
  • Perform work as part of a team or as a task/project manager, in accordance with the project budget and schedule under moderate supervision.
  • Prepare engineering cost estimates, the scope of work, and proposals and assist other Project/Task Managers with similar duties.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and technical guidance to the project team to ensure quality technical services.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with established quality control standards.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Participate in occasional site visits in an outdoor environment.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering. A Master of Science in Structures is preferred.
  • Professional Engineering Licensure (PE) in West Virginia
  • 10+ years of engineering experience on a variety of bridge types (structural steel, prestressed, and cast-in-place concrete).
  • Experience with WVDOH standards, structural directives, specifications, and design manuals.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design programs for bridge design.
  • Proficiency in Midas, CSI Bridge, AashtoWare BrR, MDX, LEAP Conspan, and other design and rating software packages
  • Excellent technical and interpersonal skills.

  • Keeps informed of new methods and developments affecting their practice and recommends new practices or changes in the emphasis of projects.
  • Leads projects of moderate complexity and scope or leads a major project.
  • Analyzes complex problems across specialty areas appropriate to the practice of engineering.
  • Analyzes ethical dilemmas to determine appropriate courses of action.
Minimum Years of Experience
  • 10+
Education
  • B.S. or M.S. Engineering
Certification/Licensure
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License, reciprocity in multiple states.
Technical Responsibilities
  • Occasionally serves as the technical advisor for the practice in the application of advanced concepts and methods in an assigned area.
  • Keeps informed of new developments and requirements affecting the practice for the purpose of recommending changes in projects or applications.
  • Occasionally develops new techniques and/or improved processes, materials, or products.
  • Values and analyzes sustainable performance of complex engineering projects from a systems perspective.
Project and Task Management
  • Occasionally plans, schedules, and coordinates the preparation of documents or activities for multiple major projects or is responsible for an entire project of a practice.
  • Analyzes project management plans for complex engineering projects.
  • Understands project delivery uncertainties and uses risk management principles to address them.
  • Reviews operational procedures to ensure compliance with applicable policies and performance measures.
Management Responsibility
  • Supervises a staff of engineers and technicians.
  • Receives administrative supervision with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.
  • Provides continued mentored experience to senior staff.
  • Integrates professional attitudes relevant to the practice of engineering and fosters creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and dependability in staff.
Communication Skills
  • Applies principles of formal strategic and persuasive communications.
  • Represents their area of specialty within the practice and liaises with related individuals and practices.
  • Routinely interacts with practice leaders, clients, officials, contractors, and others.
  • Integrates concepts of effective teamwork and leadership.
