The City of Ottawa is currently recruiting for Assistant Golf Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent will support the Golf Course Superintendent in planning and executing routine maintenance operations and projects on the golf course. This role requires proficiency in turfgrass management, irrigation and water systems, and the application of fertilizers and pesticides. The ideal candidate must demonstrate effective communication skills, foster a positive attitude, and ensure a safe working environment. The Assistant Superintendent will carry out the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with exceptional attention to detail and a strong sense of urgency.
Essential Job Functions:- Works with the Superintendent to ensure that the annual golf course maintenance budget and capital plans are maintained and followed.
- Supervises and assists maintenance staff in daily duties.
- Assists in the planning, organizing and direction of the maintenance and construction of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
- Supervises the planting and cultural practices involved in growing various turf grasses, trees and ornamental plants.
- Ensures that equipment is properly maintained.
- Assists in the procurement of supplies and materials and ensures costs remain within budgetary limitations.
- Keep records of annual maintenance activities and costs and assists with the preparation of required reports.
- Follows sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors, when possible.
- Coordinates snow removal (depending upon facility location).
- Ensure all city policies and procedures are followed including compliance with government regulations.
- Ensures associates obtain proper license needed to perform job tasks safely and within city, state, and federal regulations. Addresses directly all real or perceived environmental concerns.
- Oversees daily course maintenance
- Monitors business volume forecast and plans accordingly in areas of manpower, productivity, costs and other expenses.
- Incorporates safe work practices in job performance.
Ancillary Job Functions:- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
- Comply with all City ordinances, policies, and relevant state and federal laws. Assist other departments as needed, contributing to the overall success of municipal operations.
Education and Experience: - Preferred 1-2 years of turf management or golf course experience.
- Valid Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (not all inclusive)- Ability to receive, understand, and comply with written and oral instructions.
- General knowledge of grounds maintenance.
- Ability to safely operate various types of mechanical equipment to complete job tasks.
- Familiarity with basic computer operations and ability to generate varied reports using word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, City officials, business entities, and the general public.
- Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to work under general supervision and make responsible decisions.
- Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
Work Environment- May occasionally be required to work in confined spaces, or high/dangerous places.
