As the AHN, s/he has the authority and responsibility of managing the unit to ensure quality care for every patient in the unit and is held accountable by the use of the nursing process. S/he is responsible for the implementation of the Nursing Department philosophy and objectives of Nursing Care through the use of the Departmental and Nursing Policies and procedures. Serves as a team leader and assist Head Nurse in guiding and directing nursing personnel.Responsibilities
- Assist with direct nursing care of patient when required.
- Checks time and attendance for employees (tardiness, unscheduled absences) and reports concerns to Head Nurse.
- Collaborate with other health care professionals in the care of patients and includes the family.
- Coordinates all patient care activities in the unit.
- Conduct meetings with staff to communicate the implementation of policies, care innovations, new/revised/discontinuance of practices, policies, equipment, supplies, etc.
- Conducts interdisciplinary rounds, huddles, conferences and referrals as needed.
- Conducts, participated in the disciplinary process.
- Contribute to employee performance appraisal on the off shift.
- Coordinates all patient care activities in the unit.
- Creates staff assignments based on census, acuity and staff experience and skill level of the staff.
- Delegates staff to perform the following assignments including but not limited to vital signs, checking of code carts, checking logs (Refrigerator, Defibrillator and other unit specific logs).
- Follows up staff educational profile compliance in coordination with Head Nurse/ Assistant Head Nurse.
- Develops a plan of care that is individualized for the patient reflecting collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.
- Observes symptoms or changes in patient's care status and responds appropriately.
- Review and assist with the balancing of the staff schedule.
- Request and receives reports from staff. The conditions of patients and significant occurrences observed.
- Reports directly to the Head Nurse/Assistant Director of the Unit/Department.
Minimum Qualifications
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
- Six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse.
