Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Manages resources and delegates as appropriate to optimize achievement of unit scope and department objectives. Assists in the operations management of the unit. Promotes retention of staff through recognition and promotion of teamwork within and across shifts. Supports and encourages the professional development of nursing staff. Ensures optimal patient care standards through daily interaction and role modeling. Supports and facilitates a collaborative relationship between medical staff and hospital staff.
Supervises Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and/or other support staff in the delivery of patient care as described in Nebraska Statute 38.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Supports Nurse Manager in establishing and maintaining operational budget based on unit of service target.
Assists in concurrent and retrospective resolution of patient, family, and/or physician concerns and complaints; through service recovery, NRC alerts, and B-Safe review.
Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to ensure daily leader/patient rounding is completed for each patient. *Provides management presence on all shift hours for units that maintain 24/7 operations.
Empowers staff to actively participate in service/unit and overall nursing practice committees/councils and to operationalize the hospital vision, beliefs and patient-centered principles; mentors staff in quality performance efforts and fosters a culture based on continuous improvement.
Incorporates age-specific and cultural considerations in the delivery of patient care; ensures a patient care environment that is safe, clean, clutter-free and customer-focused.
Participates in performance and improvement projects in collaboration with other clinical staff and interdisciplinary teams including performance audits related to work responsibilities; evaluating safety practices; supporting the evaluation of new products and equipment; developing and implementing strategies to improve patient care; monitoring new research for best practice and promoting new practices and technology with staff and physicians.
Assists the Nurse Manager in staffing the unit/area for the safe and efficient delivery of patient care; plays a key role in adhering to the staffing plan.
*Reviews unit activity and monitors staffing levels on a shift basis to ensure both quality patient care and cost effectiveness.
Participates with the Nurse Manager in the process of interviewing and hiring of staff for the unit/area assigned; promotes the recognition and retention of staff.
Collaborates with nurse manager to ensure timely staff performance appraisals, ensuring staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies through coaching and individual development.
Ensures that existing policies and procedures are adhered to during daily interactions with staff; facilitates patient admissions, discharges and transfers.
Works collaboratively with other supervisory personnel to resolve issues related to staffing, patient care, physician and family concerns.
Assists and supports the Nurse Manager with communicating and implementing unit/area changes.
Supports and facilitates the preceptor program, new employee orientation, and student programs; communicates education and/or competency needs of staff to the Nurse Manager, Clinical Resource Nurse, and/or Quality Improvement & Education Coordinator.
Keeps the Nurse Manager informed of day-to-day operational needs/issues.
Timely, objectively, and constructively coaches staff as appropriate when practice and/or safety issues are observed or reported; communicates with the Nurse Manager if a colleague fails to respond to proper guidance or adhere to standards expected for quality care.
May take a patient care assignments or charge role during volume or acuity changes or during increased staffing demand.
Facilitates learning, development of critical thinking skills and all facets of practice by assessing learning and developmental needs of nursing staff, preceptors and departmental personnel and developing effective learning strategies.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.
2. Knowledge of service-related Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Standards.
3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
4. Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act required. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required within three (3) years of hire, if not yet obtained. Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience managing patient populations consistent with the area of assignment required. Charge/supervisory experience preferred.
OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:
Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.
