Position Summary

ION Biosciences is offering a full-time Assistant Production Manager position to join our Chemistry Production team in San Marcos, TX. This new role will focus on planning and projecting production schedules and timelines, authoring SOPs and batch records and reviewing lab notebooks. This role requires a strong background in organic synthesis techniques as this team works to synthesize and purify intermediates and final products in gram scale quantities, while sometimes optimizing reactions or developing novel synthetic routes. This position reports to the Production Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring you and staff are following lab safety practices, wearing appropriate PPE, maintaining a clean and efficient workspace and meticulously documenting experiments and results.
  • Cultivating a culture of innovation, efficiency, timeliness and decisiveness.
  • Planning and projecting future production cycles, verifying appropriate reagents or intermediates are ordered and stocked, and ensuring chemists have appropriate skills and equipment prior to commencing a production cycle.
  • Reviewing lab notebooks, analytical data and production records generated by staff chemists for accuracy and completeness; drafting or revising reaction schemes, SOPs and batch records.
  • Projecting production schedules, assessing production cycle progress in comparison to projections and modifying future projections or cycles based on relevant information in accordance with company goals.
  • Identifying opportunities for outsourcing intermediates, soliciting quotes, comparing costs and making value-based decisions.
  • Suggesting process improvements through reaction optimizations or equipment augmentation.
  • Communicating orally and in writing, your knowledge, procedures and results using basic terminology to teams of peer chemists and company leadership by creating reports, presentations or summaries.
  • Working with standard equipment such as rotary evaporators, vacuum pumps, lyophilizers, fume hoods and laboratory glassware.
  • Conducting separation techniques including distillation, crystallization, filtration and extraction.
  • Performing purification techniques such as recrystallization, preparative TLC, flash/column chromatography and preparative liquid chromatography (prepLC).
  • Synthesizing gram scale products and intermediates for fluorescent ion indicators.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or better in Chemistry; a focus in Organic Chemistry is preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience in a synthetic chemistry production role producing greater than gram scale.
  • 2+ years of experience in a regulated production role- GMP, ISO, etc.
  • A progressive history of laboratory roles and lead or supervisory experience.
  • A positive perspective on developing the Production Department through proper planning, setting measurable goals and effectively communicating expectations to chemists and leadership.
  • Expertise in standard chemical reaction setups such as refluxing, evaporating, drying and other conventional reaction techniques is required.
  • Fluency with common synthetic reactions like reductions, acetylations, esterifications, condensations, couplings, etc., is required. We will not consider candidates who do not possess a strong and comprehensive background in organic synthesis.
  • A working proficiency with liquid chromatographs such as HPLC, LCMS and prepLC is preferred.
  • A working proficiency with mass spectrometry is preferred.
  • A working proficiency with ChemDraw or other molecular drawing software is preferred.

Requirements

  • Daily duties are performed on-site in an office and laboratory setting.
  • Minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • May require lifting or moving items weighing up to 25 lbs.
