Provost's Distinguished Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor of Music (tenure track), focusing on Black American Music

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Department of Performing Arts at Georgetown University invites applications for a full-time tenure-line Assistant Professor position specializing in Black American music to begin on August 1, 2025. We seek candidates with expertise in Black vernacular and/or Black art music, including, for instance, jazz, hip-hop, blues, R&B, gospel, and soul, and an ability to teach introductory music theory and analysis. The position welcomes scholars engaged in new approaches to studying music, including technologically enhanced research methodologies, performance as a research method, and examining intersections between music, race, class, gender, government policy, and cultural practice.

For the first year of this position, the successful candidate will hold the title of Provost's Distinguished Faculty Fellow and will have no teaching and service responsibilities. This will allow focus on completing research projects while receiving mentorship from two senior faculty members. A 2-2 teaching load follows the fellowship year.

Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and upper-level courses in Black American music, introductory music theory and analysis, and areas aligned with the candidate's research interests. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in strengthening our American Musical Cultures major and expanding our curricular offerings.

We seek applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the diversity of perspectives and experiences within academic communities. Candidates should describe their past contributions to diversity and equity in their professional careers and their plans to continue these efforts at Georgetown. This includes work in teaching, research, and service that addresses the needs of a diverse student population. Candidates with a Ph.D. or DMA in diverse disciplines of music studies (excluding music education) are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will contribute to the department's interdisciplinary research efforts, reflecting the department's traditional and creative modes of research. Washington, DC's rich musical history and vibrant contemporary scene provide additional scholarly research and practice opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. or DMA in a relevant music discipline or in related studies by August 1, 2025. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in Black American music, theory, and analysis, representing a broad array of perspectives and methodologies. They must be able to teach and conduct research across various Black American musical genres and practices and engage with current trends in the field.
