Job Description

The Department of Natural Sciences at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in inorganic chemistry, with the appointment beginning in Fall 2025. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellence in teaching, engagement of students in research, experience in externally-funded projects, a record of publishing in academic journals, and evidence of service at their institutions.

Chemistry is the newest degree program in the Department of Natural Sciences and offers three undergraduate degrees: a BS, BA, or a BS with teacher certification in Chemistry. As a tenure-track member of the Chemistry team at a rapidly growing, aspirational university, faculty are expected to pursue external funding and actively publish in their area of expertise. This position requires a willingness to mentor undergraduates in research and to be an active participant in building the Chemistry Program. Teaching responsibilities will include lecture and laboratory instruction in inorganic chemistry as well as entry-level chemistry courses. Enhancing student success in these foundational courses is a high priority for the university. The current teaching load for faculty with active research programs is 3/3. Faculty are expected to contribute service to the department, college, university, community and profession.

The Department of Natural Sciences aims to provide the best possible educational experiences in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, and Water Resources Sciences & Technology (WATER). Our distinct undergraduate degree programs prepare students for entry into the workplace or graduate programs. We value hands-on, interdisciplinary experiences to provide a broad perspective in the natural sciences.

Job Responsibilities

* Teach the equivalent of 18 course credits per academic year (3/3 teaching load) in Chemistry courses, both upper and lower division.

* Outfit and manage a new research laboratory.

* Pursue external funding and develop a research program at A&M-SA that results in tangible (e.g. peer-reviewed manuscripts, patents, etc.) products.

* As part of the newest program in the Natural Science Dept, service related to enhancing the Chemistry program is a top priority. Service at the department, college, university, community, and professional levels is also expected.

Required Education and Experience:

* A Ph.D. in Chemistry with a specialization in inorganic chemistry from an accredited university at time of appointment.

* Evidence of scholarly achievement in inorganic chemistry.

* Postdoctoral experience in chemistry.

* Excellent skills in interaction and communication with students, faculty, and staff.

Preferred Education and Experience:

* All areas of inorganic chemistry will be considered. We particularly encourage candidates whose research agenda broadens the current expertise of the chemistry program, especially those whose work addresses contemporary issues. Candidates with expertise in bio-inorganic, organometallic, solid-state/materials chemistry, or health-related issues are particularly encouraged to apply. Both experimental and theoretical chemists are invited to submit applications.

* Evidence of excellence in teaching commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor.

* Evidence of mentoring students in chemistry-related research.

* Awareness and understanding of the needs of a non-traditional, first-generation, multicultural student body.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Ability to complete tasks and work cooperatively with others.

* Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently.

* Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.

* Ability to interact with students and faculty from distinct backgrounds.
